By Steve Oko
The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has denied endorsing President Muhammadu Buhari for the February 16 presidential poll.
Ohanaeze Youths Council, OYC, in a press statement jointly signed by the Acting National Leader, Dr. Kingsley Dozie, and National Publicity Secretary, Osmond Nekoma, debunked insinuations that the youth body had adopted Buhari as its consensus candidate for the election.
The statement dismissed as cheap propaganda and the handiwork of the fifth columnist that OYC had during its recent visit to the President in Abuja declared support for him.
OYC explained that the visit by its leadership to the Presidential Villa was only part of the efforts to ensure Ndigbo get their fair share in the scheme of things, and did not in any way amount to endorsement of Buhari as being misconstrued by the fifth columnist.
OYC said it had written to the presidential candidates of the major political parties, indicating willingness to engage them to know their agenda for Ndigbo but Buhari was the first to invite them, hence the visit.
The youth body insisted that the powers to adopt a consensus presidential candidate for Ndigbo reside with its parent body, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
OYC pledged its unmitigated loyalty to the national leadership of Ohanaeze which it said is striving hard to exposition the Igbo race.
The statement read in part :”It has come to the notice of the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing the activities of some fifth columnists trying to recast our honest visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in bad light.
“Tt is worthy of note that our visit to the President was conceived out of our desire to contribute to the ongoing national discuss aimed at getting the best for Ndigbo in the forthcoming elections and ensuring the safety of our lives and properties across Nigeria
“Naturally, in the course of our visit, we thanked him for the few things he has done for Ndigbo in the areas of infrastructure and security especially during the just conclude yuletide. But never endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for the 2019.
” Hence mischief makers should desist from recasting the speech made by our Acting National Leader Kingsley Dozie to mean a tacit endorsement of the incumbent president, or foreclose the candidacy of any of the gladiators in the forthcoming elections.
“The final decision of the political direction of the Igbo nation as it concerns the 2019 election rests with apex arm of Ohaneze Ndigbo under the able leadership of our charismatic President-General Chief John Nnia Nwodo. And we remain loyal and dedicated to achieving the ultimate Igbo goal in the 2019 elections.”
