I ‘ll purse power devolution, LG autonomy when I return to senate – Ohuabunwa
* Decries biting economic hardship
By Steve Oko
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa who represented Abia North in the eight Senate, has vowed to aggressively pursue power devolution and financial autonomy of Local Governments if voted back to the Senate.
This is as he decried the biting economic hardship in the country occasioned by the scarcity of currency and the high cost of petrol.
The former Senate Committee Chairman on Primary Health and Communicable Diseases who lost his return bid in 2019, traced Nigeria’s major problems to the concentration of excess power at the centre.
Senator Ohuabunwa who featured on ” Open Parliament”, a live radio programme in Umuahia, regretted that despite the clamour for restructuring and full financial autonomy for LGAs, the aspiration had remained a tall order.
He noted that the reason not much development was witnessed at the third tier of Government was as a result of the overbearing influence of State Governments on Council funds under the guise of Joint Allocation.
Wawa News Global reports that the former Leader, House of Representatives, also regretted the inability of the current National Assembly to assert its legislative authority to move the country forward.
He seriously advocated ‘sector by sector’ restructuring of Nigeria until the major causes of ethnic tensions and other criss were addressed.
Ohuabunwa commended the current National Assembly for passing the new Electoral Act but said that anyone who opposed the passage of electronic transmission of election results should not be voted back to the Parliament.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senatorial candidate for Abia North, also promised to leverage on his legislative privileges and contacts to frontally tackle insecurity ravaging the zone.
He regretted that all those who were supposed to be speaking for the zone had suddenly gone mute for political correctness, and vowed to restore the dignity of Abia North if voted back to the Senate.
He also expressed sadness over the abandonment of the N5.2 billion Ohafia/Arochukwu federal road which he attracted but promised to ensure its completion if voted back to the red chamber.
Ohuabunwa later in a campaign tour at Abiriba, Nkopro and Ohafia communities, promised to attract more federal projects to the zone.
He sympathised with the people over the bitting economic hardship which he blamed on the leadership ineptitude of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.
” Look at what Nigerians are passing through today due to the hardship imposed on us by APC. A litre of fuel today is between N430 and N500; kerosene N1000; diesel N850; and cooking gas N800 per kg. Life has become unaffordable for both the poor and the rich. Everybody is now crying.
” Even to get your money in the bank has become hellish. It has never been this bad in Nigeria. That’s why we should not look the direction of anybody with broom in the forthcoming elections.
” Nigeria must be rescued from the hands of those who have no knowledge of governance”, Ohuabunwa declared.
He noted that Nigeria was meant to be a great nation but blamed the country’s woes on bad leadership.
