Breaking: Ohafia FC win Sen Ohuabunwa’s Abia North football competition

Ohafia United Football Club, Sunday evening defeated Umunneochi Tigers in the finals of 2022 Senator Mao Ohuabunwa annual soccer competition for Abia North.
The match which ended goaless at full time was later decided in a penalty shootout that ended 4:2 in favour of Ohafia United.
Bende defeated Arochukwu to clinch the third place position in an earlier clash at the Ohafia Local Government play ground.
The winners went home with N500,000 while the first runner up got N300,000 courtesy of Senator Ohuabunwa.
The third position received N200,000 while other 10 participating teams minus the winners got a consolation price of N50,000 each.
Family of a former player in the tournament, Chinagorom Uko from Amaekpu Ohafia who died last year following a sickness also got N50,000 consolation.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Senator Ohuabunwa said the annual competition was aimed at discovering youths with talent in football.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senatorial candidate for Abia North who was represented by his Campaign Director in Ohafia LGA, Dr Onyema Agbai, said the competition was also aimed at motivating youths in the zone to engage in useful ventures instead of idling away.
He thanked the participants and encouraged them to take soccer seriously as some people had made career through football.
Later in an interview, the Tournament Coordinator and National President of Grassroot Sports Federation of Nigeria,
Hon. John Ekpenyong, said a total of eight players were discovered during the tournament.
He said the discovered players would be playing for ALGON Boys Football Club in National League Division One.
According him, four were discovered from Arochukwu while two came from Ohafia and Umunneochi respectively.
He further said that two among the star players discovered in previous tournaments “are now playing abroad”.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and the in-coming Deputy Chairman of Arochukwu LGA, Chief Felix Ukpai, expressed joy at the successful end of the tournament.
He said that one of the objectives of the competition was talent haunt which according to him will make more youths to develop interest in football.
Wawa News Global reports that the annual competition was instituted in 2015.
The tournament which had each LGA in Abia North represented by two soccer teams, is being organized by Grassroots Sports Federation, South South Zone.
The Federation with the motto: “Dedication to Youths Development Nationwide”, is recognized by the Federal Ministry of Sports & Social Development.
