Old Bende stakeholders to Ikpeazu: Don’t set Abia on fire, drop ‘Ngwa self-succession agenda’
* Insist on power shift to Abia North
By Steve Oko
Political stakeholders from Old Bende Division comprising five Councils in Abia North and three in Abia Central Senatorial Districts, have advised Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, not to take any step capable of setting the state on fire.
The stakeholders cutting across various political parties who met at Bende Town Hall urged the governor to jettison ” Ngwa self succession agenda”, which according to them is a prelude to political crisis in the state.
In a 12-point communique issued after the meeting, the stakeholders vowed to resist any attempt to truncate the prevailing power rotation arrangement in the state, insisting that going by the Abia charter of equity, power should return to Abia North in 2023.
They said that Gov. Ikpeazu, being a product of equity, should refrain from any act capable of distabilising the state, urging him to support power shift to Abia North.
” The Governor should toe the line of his predecessors by endorsing Abia North as the rightful zone to produce the next governor”, the stakeholders said.
They also bared sons and daughters of Abia North from accepting the position of Deputy Governor or Campaign Director General to any Governorship candidate from outside the zone.
The communiqué was signed by former Secretary to State Government SSG, Dr Eme Okoro; Udochukwu Ogbonna; High Chief Kenneth Okonkor; Rev. O. C Obioha; and Chief M. N Ogbuagu.
It read in part:” Alarmed by the existential threat posed to the poltical survival of Abia North senatorial zone in the light of weird, and controversial zoning arrangement by PDP;
” Concerned by disparaging comments by highly- placed political office hoiders in the state that there are no suitable Governorship aspirants from Abia North senatorial zone;
“And determined to ensure that the Abia charter of Equity is upheld with power ‘returning to Abia North senatorial zone in 2023, we hereby submit as follows :
” That we totally reject the zoning arrangement announced by the ruling PDP that the Governorship of Abia state has been zoned to Abia North and Abia Central simultaneously.
“We reaffirm that it is the tum of Abia North to produce the next governor of the ‘state going by the charter of Equity endorsed by the founding fathers of the state
“It is morally offensive and an attempt to create political crisis in the state the current efforts by Ngwa people to hold on to power after eight years against the spirit and letters of the charter of Equity
“That Abia for the purposes of sharing political offices and other amenities, is made of three zones of Abia North, Abia Central and Abia South. Old Aba division and Old Bende division are not recognized by the 1999 constitution which is currently in operation.
“Arising from the above, It ls the tum of Abla North to produce the next governor of ‘the state and we urge our brothers and sisters trom other zones to respect the charter of Equity and support us as we supported them in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019.”
