Pandemonium in Umuahia as robbers kill Chinese’s driver, police orderly, steal cash

There was frenzy Friday afternoon in Umuahia, as robbers shot dead the police orderly and driver of a Chinese expatriate
and made away with an unspecified amount of money which he had just withdrawn from the bank.
The incident which happened around the popular Isi-Gate area of the state capital caused pandemonium in the city as residents scampered for safety following sporadic gunshots by the men of the underworld.
As residents fled to different directions with the news that unknown gunmen had stormed the capital city, there was contagious apprehension across the city.
Shop owners especially those along the major streets quickly shut down for fear of the unknown.
The streets remained deserted for hours until the clear picture of what happened began to emerge.
Police Public Relations Officer PPRO Geoffrey Ogbonna who confirmed the robbery attack said the robbers trailed the Chinese from the bank where he had gone to make withdrawal.
Ogbonna said the attackers also collected the riffle of the police orderly before fleeing.
The PPRO who said that the Chinese was safe disclosed that the police had launched investigation into the matter .
He urged members of the public to assist police with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
His words: “What happed today in Umuahia was a case of armed robbery. The victims were trailed from the bank by robbers who shot and killed the driver and the police orderly and collected the money and the rifle.
” The Chinese is the one that usually goes for such errand for his office. It’s quite unfortunate. We are looking for possible informant.”
