Police arrest Army general for gun running in Abia

A Major General in the Nigerian Army (names withheld) has been arrested in Aba the commercial capital of Abia State for gun running.
Commissioner of Police, Etim Okon who disclosed this Monday at a press briefing in Umuahia said the suspect was arrested with guns including AK47 and pistols.
He said the suspect along with other members of the syndicate were currently in police custody and undergoing interrogations.
The police boss who refused to disclose the identity of the suspect said efforts were still on to retrieve arms which the syndicate had already sold to their customers.
The Police Commissioner also disclosed that no fewer than 411 suspected criminals had been arrested by the police in Abia between February 25 and December 15, 2019.
He gave a breakdown of the suspects to include : 127 robbers, 114 kidnappers ,150 cultists, and 20 motorcycles snatchers.
The CP said 648 fire arms and ammunition as well as 110 vehicles were recovered within the period under review.
Similarly, no fewer than 79 kidnap victims were also rescued within the period while five firearm dealers were arrested.
He said 658 of the suspects had already been charged to court.
The CP however, regretted that the command lost seven personnel on the line of duty within the period under review.
He said that the Command was not relenting in its efforts to clear the state of criminals, saying that crime rate had significantly reduced across the state.
The police boss however noted that there had been pockets of robbery incidents within the capital city by gang members of the notorious criminal popularly known as “Grave” since last week after he was shot dead by police.
He however said about 12 members of the notorious gang whose activities are more rampart around World Bank area of Umuahia had been arrested.
The CP said the gang also specialised in car snatching, adding that their hideout where they dismantle the stolen cars “within 10 minutes ” at Ubakala has also been busted.
Okon warned criminals to steer clear from the state and assured residents of the safety of their lives and property especially during the festivities.
He said his officers and men had been fully mobilised to ensure residents of the state had a peaceful yuletide.
The Commissioner who said the ban on the use of firearms was still in force, urged parents to advise their children and wards against fireworks as anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law.
