Tragedy struck weekend at Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State as stray bullet allegedly fired by a security guard hit and killed a Primary School teacher simply identified as Mercy.

According to a local source, Mercy had gone for a funeral service of a relation being held at the community when she met her untimely death.

The source said the deceased highly reputed for her enterprising spirit and obedience was busy serving at the funeral function when the stray bullet meandered and pierced her chest region.

According to the source, the stray bullet was fired by the security guard of a certain wealthy man in the community (names withheld) who allegedly ordered his guard to fire some shots to welcome his guest.

The source said that as the shots were being fired into the air to welcome the said guest of the wealthy man, the killer stray bullet came from nowhere and hit the deceased who was helping to serve at the venue of the burial ceremony.

She was then rushed to the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia where she was later certified dead.

The source said it was the said ‘big man’ who was devastated by the ugly incident that conveyed the victim to the hospital in his car.

” The most unfortunate and strange thing was that Mercy’s only brother just died suddenly in Italy about two years ago, and it was this same big man who assisted the family in bringing home the corpse.

” We don’t know how this tragedy decided to happen to this family again after the sudden death of the only son. We are still seized by the shock”, the source lamented.

But when contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in charge of Abia State, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he was not yet aware of the incident.
