Abia PDP may lose two federal lawmakers to APC
. They are greedy, want to perpetuate selves in office, we won’t miss them – PDP
By Steve Oko, Umuahia
Barring any last minutes change of mind, two Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) federal lawmakers from Abia State are set to defect to the All Progressive Congress ( APC).
Both lawmakers are members of the House of Representatives according to findings by Wawa News Global.
Further investigations by our correspondent revealed that while one of the legislators is from Abia North senatorial zone the other is from Abia South.
It was also gathered that both are currently in their third tenure at the Green chamber.
A source close to one of the legislators confirmed to our correspondent that his principal’s defection had been concluded and would happen “in a matter of days”.
The source said the lawmaker who is very influential and highly connected decided to dump PDP because the party had derailed in the state.
According to the source the lawmaker’s defection had already started causing panic in PDP because of the legislator’s political weight as the party would not afford to lose such asset “but it is already too late”.
The source said Abia North had already fallen to APC, boasting that APC will also claim the state in 2019.
He noted that while APC might seem to be losing members at the centre, in Abia the party ” is gaining because the people are resolved to vote out PDP because of misrule”.
Another chieftain of PDP from Abia North confided in our correspondent that the rumour of the planned defection of the lawmaker had already rattled the party particularly in the affected LGA.
The chieftain said the lawmaker “has enormous political weight and anybody underrating that does so at his/ her peril”.
The chieftain regretted that PDP-led government in the state does not seem to understand the dynamics of politics and the peculiar nature of the 2019 polls ” as APC is desperate to claim Abia at all cost”.
He frowned at the attempts by the PDP leader in the council who wants to impose his brother, a serving Council boss as the PDP candidate for the House of Assembly in 2019.
The chieftain said the people were very upset by the action of the said leader who is a very close ally of the Governor , warning that if the issue is not properly addressed PDP might witness mass exodus in the council in the days ahead.
Findings also revealed that another PDP serving council boss in Abia North is working to actualise the political ambition of the brother to a former Governor of the state.
Although the former Governor’s mother’s brother recently decamped to PDP, the project if actualised would jeopardise the political interest of the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly who is the current occupant of the seat.
Speculations are also very strong that another influential member of the state House of Assembly from Umuahia axis may dump PDP if he fails to secure the party’s return ticket for 2019.
It is not yet clear the party he would adopt to actualise his ambition in the event of his leaving PDP but the lawmaker according to political watchers might be a beautiful bride to APC where some of his family members are already calling the shots.
It was also gathered that there are grumblings by some PDP members in the state who feel that they are being starved of funds to mobilise for the party ahead of 2019.
But when contacted for his reaction, the Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Chief Don Ubani said the party would not in any way be jolted by the planned defection.
Chief Ubani said that both federal lawmakers had since left the party as they had for a long time ceased cooperation with the party.
He also said they were driven by greed and selfishness as they want to perpetuate themselves in office against the principles of equity and fairness.
” If a member of PDP decides to defect to another party, first of all we need to know his/ her pedigree and contributions to the party. If the person has been sitting on the fence since the last three years we lose nothing by his / her defection.
” In fact the lawmaker in quote in Abia North has long left the party. How can somebody who has been in the House of Representatives for three tenures of 12 years insist on going for the fourth term and you expect the other Local Government Area that makes up the constituency to be watching.
” We have a similar case in Ukwa East/ Ukwa West federal constituency where the incumbent has been there for three terms and you expect him to go again? They are selfish and only afraid that the tide of equity will expose them and they are trying to hide their shame under the guise of defection.”
The PDP Spokesman said the party would not encourage greed but always endeavour to enthrone inclusive governance where every political bloc in the state would be given their fair share , and democracy dividends equitably distributed.
On the boasting by APC that it would sack PDP from the Abia seat of power come 2019, Ubani said Abia remained a stronghold of PDP, asserting that it would be very difficult for any party to uproot it.
” It is true that human beings are unpredictable but it will be a difficult task and an impossible mission for PDP to be dislodged in Abia”, Ubani declared, adding that the PDP-led administration in the state has given a good account of itself in all sectors.
