Abia’s next speaker should come from central – Ezekwesiri
By Steve Oko
Member representing Ummunneochi state constituency in the Abia House of Assembly, Hon. Ikedi Ezekwesiri, has opined that Abia Central should be allowed to produce the next Speaker of the House.
This, he said would be in the spirit of equity and Justice which requires fair distribution of key political offices among all three senatorial zones in the state.
The All Progressive Congress, APC lawmaker who lost to a Peoples Democratic Party challenger at the just -concluded polls argued that since Abia South and North respectively, produced the Governor and his Deputy, equity demanded that the Speaker should come from the Central.
He however submitted that competence and ability should be the deciding factors in selecting the next Speaker of the House.
Positing that every ranking member of the House is qualified and entitled to contest for the Speakership position, Ezekwesiri advised the members-elect to go for a Speaker who would help advance the cause of democracy in the state.
The lawmaker who spoke exclusively with Wawa News Global said he had taken his loss at the poll in good faith, adding that God’s will is the best at any time.
Meanwhile intense lobbying and intrigues have been going on for the Speakership position with the incumbent, Rt. Chikwendu Kalu representing Isiala Ngwa South ; and the Leader of the House, Hon. Chinedum Orji (Umuahia Central) as frontliners.
Wawa News Global findings indicate that the son of the former Governor appears to be the favourite of many who argue that since the Governor is from Ngwa land, having another Ngwa man as the Speaker will shortchange Umuahia bloc in the power equation of the state.
