The 73rd birthday of a former Governor of Abia State and the immediate-past Senator representing Abia Central at the Senate, Senator Theodore Orji, was celebrated in style as he distributed dozens of both exercise and text books, writing materials, office desks and other items to schools in the state.
Senator Orji popularly known as Ochendo Global, also visited orphanage and physically challenged homes in the state where he donated food items including bags of rice and cartons of indommie noddles.
It was outpouring of encomiums at the benefiting schools and orphanage homes as they received Orji’s team with excitement.
Presenting the items to the benefitting schools and homes through his former Liaison Officer, Hon. Ifeanyi Umere, the former Governor said the gesture was borne out of his passion for humanity.
He said he decided to celebrate his birthday with schools and orphanages to further demonstrate his care for the less privileged.
Speaking at Ibeku High School, Umere said that Senator Orji had promoted education while in office both as Governor and Senator.
He noted that hundreds of university undergraduates benefited from Senator Orji’s personal scholarship scheme which he Instituted to give opportunity to indigent but brilliant Abians to acquire higher education.
The former Governor promised his continued support for the promotion of education, adding that he will use the rest of his life for the service of humanity.
” Life is all about impacts. Senator T. A Orji has resolved to use his remaining years on earth to serve humanity just as he has always done”.
He charged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gesture by studying hard.
Responding, the Principal of Ibeku (Senior Secondary), Mr Matthew Uzuegbu; and his counterpart for the Junior section, Mrs Ada Ocho respectively, lauded the former Governor for the gesture.
Mrs Ocho who said Senator Orji had always supported the school, recalled how the Governor’s wife, Mrs Odochi Orji, an alumnus of the school, built a pavilion for them.
She promised that the books meant for the students would be distributed to them accordingly.
Similarly, the Senior Prefect, Master Valentine Ibe, showered praises on the former Governor saying that the books would lessen financial burden on their parents.
In the same vein, Reverend Sister Ugonna Anyanwu in charge of St. Vincent The Paul Centre for the Mentally and Physically Challenged, Umuafai Umuahia, commended Senator Orji, for extending the gesture to inmates of the home.
She said that feeding the 50 inmates of the home had been a major challenge of the home.
” This morning, we managed the last one and half carton of indommie we had here. Thank God he remembered us and sent these cartons and bags of rice.
” We have some inmates here who have stayed for 20 years, and abandoned by their owners. Government visits us occasionally but we need more help.”
The Proprietress of Agape Charity Home Old Umuahia, Rose Okonkwo, also commended Senator Orji for always empathising with the inmates of the home.
She said the action of the former Governor would significantly reduce the financial pressure on the home especially in view of the biting economic hardship in the country.
Responding to an inquiry, she identified lack of access to pediatric hospital, lack of power, poor access road, and feeding as part of the major challenges of the home.
She called on other public- spirited individuals and corporate organizations to emulate Senator Orji, and come to the rescue of the home and similar homes in the state.
