Non inclusion of tribe in census statistics, ploy to downplay Igbo population – Abia ex – commissioner
By Steve Oko
Former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Abia State, Sir Emeka Okafor, has claimed that the refusal of the National Population Commission, NPC, to reflect ones tribe in the census statistics, is designed to suppress the population of the Igbo tribe scattered in every part of the country.
According to him, greater number of Ndigbo live outside Igbo land, and the non-inclusion of such vital information in the census statistics is a deliberate ploy to exploit them for the population advantage of their host states.
Okafor who stated this while addressing members of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in Umuahia North, urged eligible Igbo voters to ensure they acquire their voter’s card before the expiration of the new deadline to enable them “re-set Nigeria in 2023” .
The former Commissioner insisted that Ndigbo are the largest ethnic group in Nigeria but regretted that most policies of the Federal Government are targeted against them.
He, therefore, urged Ndigbo to embrace APGA as their regional party to help them regain their
lost grounds in the political equilibrum of the country.
Okafor who is the Director General of the Campaign Organisation of APGA’s governorship candidate in Abia, Professor Greg Ibe, expressed faith that Abia would be rebuilt if APGA were voted into power in 2023.
Addressing a crowd of party faithful during the visit, the state Chairman of APGA, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, advised them against the antics of those he described as “emergency philanthropists”, who only embark on humanitarian gestures during election seasons for the purpose of winning elections.
Ehiemere who said that Abia was “sick and in the intensive care unit”, urged the people to rally behind APGA candidates in 2023 for the emancipation of the state.
Later in a similar visit at Umuokpara, APGA candidate for Umuahia South state constituency, Chief Emmanuel Egwu, said the wind of change blowing across the state would blow away the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
He promised to sponsor a compulsory bill that will make pensioners go home with their entitlements at the point of their retirement.
In a remark, the candidate for Umuahia North state consituency, Chinedu Obilor ( Iyierioba), said that the plights of Abia workers and pensioners following months of unpaid salaries, would be a thing of the past under APGA.
