Michael Okpara, sen Orji’s kindreds bicker over Ikwuano/Umuahia fed rep seat
By Steve Oko
The Ohuhu kindred of the late Premier of Old Eastern region, Dr Michael Okpara; and the Ibeku clan of Senator Theodore Orji, are currently engrossed in war of words over whose turn it is to produce the occupant of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal consituency.
Some elders of Ohuhu land had claimed that “it is the turn of Ohuhu clan” to produce occupant of the seat in 2023; but in a swift reaction, Ibeku elders also laid claims on the federal seat.
The Ibeku elders in a communiqué after their meeting, explained that contrary to claims by Ohuhu clan, it is Ibeku clan that had been marginalized.
They claimed that where as Ohuhu sons had variously occupied the seat for three times, Ibeku people had represented the constituency twice, hence, their insistence that it is their turn in 2023 for equity and justice.
The communiqué made available to Vanguard read in part: ” The claim that it is the turn of Ohuhu clan to produce a federal House of Representatives member in 2023, is obviously hollow and baseless. It is rather the turn of Ibeku clan.
” Ohuhu clan had in the past produced three representatives namely: Ambassador Empire Kanu, Chief Adimoha Ikemba, and Barrister Ahanonu; while Ibeku clan has only produced Hon. Onyembu Akomas, and Rt. Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka.”
The communiqué was signed by former Commissioner for Chieftain and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Charles Ogbonnaya; another former Commissioner who held same office, Chief Emma Nwabuko; former Leader of Abia House of Assembly, Hon. Chidiebere Nwoke; and the Traditional Prime Minister of Ibeku ancient kingdom, High Chief Uche Akwukwuegbu, among others.
