Pressure mounts on Abia Speaker to join guber race
By Steve Oko
Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, has come under pressure to join the 2023 Abia governorship race.
A group of youths under the eagis of ‘Ikikufied Youth Movement’ besieged the Speaker’s Umuahia residence on Tuesday to beg him to contest in the governorship race.
The group chanted solidarity songs and displayed the Speaker’s photos urging him to come and rescue the state.
Spokesman of the group who introduced himself as Bishop Ike, said that the antecedents of the Speaker and his tremendous achievements so far as Speaker were the reasons Abia youths were rooting for him.
He said that the Speaker’s empowerment programmes had made positive impacts on many youths more than many people in positions of authority.
” We believe in his personality. He has the competence and vision to fix Abia.
” He is one leader that remembers the youths. As Speaker he has trained 1500 Abia youths on ICT. He has been giving free water to the people plus other projects in his constituency.”
Asked if his joining the race would not contrast the clamour for power shift to Abia North based on Charter of Equity, Ike said power should go to Abia North but the zone needed to show seriousness in the race.
” Is Abia North seriously contesting? We are hearing endorsements here and there and we don’t want the state to go into wrong hands.
” I think power should go to Abia North but are they really ready for power? Are they waiting for Ikuku to get it and bring it to them?”
Asked what would be their fate assuming the Speaker refused to heed their call, the group said ” he should show us where to go”.
The Spokesman said that the group is a formidable movement with presence and membership across the 17 councils of the state.
Receiving the group, former Commissioner for Lands, Suleiman Ukandu, told the youths that the Speaker was not at home.
They begged him to convey their plea to him.
The ruling Peoples Democratic Party PDP had Saturday, zoned its governorship ticket to Abia North and Abia Central where the Speaker hails from.
