There is tension and palpable fear around the Isiama Afaraukwu Umuahia community of Abia State following the attack on the President General, Chief Ikechukwu Ndubueze by a thug allegedly hired by a stranger element living in the community.

The community is the country home of the Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The locals have accused the stranger simply identified as Ogala Doris of being “a thorn in the flesh of the community” and a bad influence on their youths.
They equally accused her of attacking their President General with thugs and obstructing a road project in the area boasting to get away with it using her high connections to top security agents.
According to them the road project was awarded by the state government as part of preparations for the burial of their late monarch, HRM Israel Kanu, and his wife, Ugoeze Sally Kanu, but the project could not be delivered before their burial on February 14.

They said the contractor had returned to site but regretted that Doris “is now constituting herself a clog on the wheel of progress”.
President General of the Community, Chief Ikechukwu Ndubueze who spoke to newsmen at the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia where he is receiving treatment following some injuries he sustained after the attack said he escaped death by the whiskers.
Narrating his ordeal, Ndubueze said he had received a report that Doris was obstructing the on-going road construction in the community and went to the scene to see things for himself.
According to him, Doris had blocked a section of the road that passed through her family house with trips of sand and resisted the contractor handling the road project from tipping off chippings at the junction close to her house.

The PG said that he asked Doris not to obstruct the road project but she insisted that no chippings should be dropped close to her house until she was through with her own project.
He said that instead of heeding the advice not to resist the road project being undertaken by the state government, she rather descended on him with her thugs.
The PG said the thug attacked him with machete, shovel and stones, leaving him severely injured before he was rescued by members of the community.
Ndubueze alleged that Doris had suddenly become “a thorn in the flesh of the community” without regard for anybody.
” She has become troublesome without regard for anybody, bragging that she is very close to top police officers and governors”.
Corroborating the account of the PG later at a press briefing in the community, one of the Village Heads, Chief Ben Ohaeri, said that Doris deliberately wanted to disrupt the community road project apparently to prove her ” powerful influence”.
He said that he witnessed the attack on the President General, adding that after he was rushed to the hospital, Doris’ brother blocked the junction leading to their building with a mini bus which was later burnt in the night by the stranger or her agents apparently to implicate the community.
He accused Doris of distablising the peace of the community since after the death of her late father who had lived peacefully with them.
He further alleged that she had been a bad influence on a lot of youths including his own son, and asked her to quit the community.
“Isiama Afaraukwu is peace -loving; we accept strangers but this can never happen in Item where she comes from. So, we want her to leave our community “.
Adding her voice, the contractor handling the road project, Maureen Uzochukwu said that trouble started on Wednesday when their trucks brought chipping from Abakaliki, and wanted to tip them at the junction close to Doris house, but she resisted the attempt.
The contractor said she (contractor) quickly sought the intervention of the PG who promptly stormed the scene but was attacked by Doris and her thugs.
Uzochukwu who said she was pushed into the gutter during the melee, decried the action of the assailant.
She said her life was in danger following threats by some unknown callers .
The contractor said she had notified the Commissioner for Works as well as Information who assured her that government would handle the situation.
Meanwhile, the Prince of the community and the younger brother to the IPOB Leader, Prince Emmanuel, has dissociated IPOB from the incident.
Prince Emmanuel told newsmen that contrary to claims by Doris, IPOB had nothing to do with the matter, and warned her from discrediting the peaceful movement through blackmail.
He said he had noticed heavy police presence in the community and inquired from one of the personnel on a road block who told him they received a report that IPOB was planning an attack in the community.
Prince Emmanuel said it was people like Doris who write fictitious petitions against IPOB to blackmail it, and warned her to retrace her step before it’s too late, adding that she is too small for IPOB.
When contacted, Doris who sounded prevaricative, claimed she did not comprehend the matter.
“I don’t understand what you are saying “, she told one of the newsmen who called her and dropped her call.
Further attempts to reach her later failed as her phone was switched off as at the time of filing this report.
Similarly, efforts to contact the police failed as the Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna did not pick his calls even though they rang out.
