Journalists celebrate Abia media day

Journalists in Abia State, on Saturday , celebrated Abia Media Day in Umuahia.
The event which had the theme: “Celebrating The Voice of Abia, Empowering the future of Media”, was held at Rapha Hotel, Umuahia and was attended by media professionals from various media houses in the state.
In a remark, Gov. Alex Otti said the media had very crucial role for democracy to thrive in any society.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, commended media practitioners in the state for their objective reportage.
He noted the challenges facing journalists and promised more robust relationship between his administration and media practitioners in the state.
Speaking at the event, the Manager of FLO FM, Samson Eze who is one of the organizers of the event said that the event was organized for media professionals in the state “to wind down and share thoughts together.”
He thanked journalists in the state for coming, adding that the event will be an annual event.
Some journalists who spoke during a panel session at the event addressed various issues concerning journalism profession in the state.
One of the panelists, Mr Steve Oko of Vanguard Newspapers, decried abuse in the profession which he traced to the invasion of the industry by untrained practitioners.
He advised online news bloggers to always fact- check their information before publishing to reduce the rate of fake news.
One of the highlights of the event was recognition awards given to some veterans in the media industry in the state.
The Abia Media Day was attended by media professionals, government representatives, stakeholders in the media industry and students of mass communication from some tertiary institutions in the state.
