Joy as Sen Ohuabunwa empathises inmates at Ohafia IDP camp

There was jubilation weekend, as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP senatorial candidate for Abia North, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, visited the inmates of Internally Displaced Persons, IDP camp at Amaekpu Ohafia.

The camp located at Ugomba Cultural Pavilion Amaekpu Ohafia is currently housing hundreds of locals displaced at Amangwu Ohafia following a confrontation between soldiers and some youths in the community.
Wawa News Global had reported that a soldier on pass in the area was reportedly abducted, hence a raid by the Army on rescue operation that left no fewer than 10 persons dead and many houses reportedly destroyed in the community but the Army denied destroying any house, claiming that only shrines allegedly used by armed hoodlums in the area were destroyed.

Locals including women and children who deserted the community during the fiasco are now being sheltered at the IDP camp under pitiable conditions.
Addressing the mammoth crowd of IDPs during the visit, Senator Ohuabunwa sympathised with them and promised to help draw Government’s attention to their plights.

The former Leader ECOWAS Parliament who was represented by the Deputy Secretary of his Campaign Council, and former Chairman, Arochukwu Local Government Area, Hon. Princely Kingsley Ngunu, decried the disturbing security challenges in Abia North.

He urged the IDPs not to despair, assuring that Government would soon assist them to return to their homes..


The former Senate Committee Chairman on Primary Health and Communicable Diseases, donated food stuff and other relief materials to the IDPs.
Responding, a stakeholder in Ohafia, Dr Onyema Agai commended Senator Ohuuabunwa for the humanitarian gesture, and prayed God to replenish him.
Agbai who described the condition of the IDPs as pathetic, pleaded with public-spirited individuals as well as organizations and Government to come to the rescue of the victims.
He appealed to the IDPs to remain peaceful and law abiding, while efforts are made to address the issues that led to their ordeals.



Speaking on behalf of Amaekpu Ohafia Council of Chiefs, HRM Eze Uduma Obuba Kalu, decried the condition of locals at the IDP camp, while soliciting more support for them.
The monarch called for full investigation into the incident that led to their displacement.
He commended Senator Ohuuabunwa for providing succour to the refugees.
The monarch said that Amaekpu Ohafia community out of brotherly affection decided to shelter their Amangwu kinsmen affected by the crisis in the community.
He solicited Government quick intervention to rehabilitate the affected victims particularly women and children.
Some key members of Senator Ohuabunwa Campaign Council present during the visit were Tony Okoro, Tom Ezeikpe, Dr Isaac Nkole, Dr Tom Ezeikpe, Comrade Iroham Ndubueze, among others.
