Joy in Abia as Greg Ibe gives free fuel to shuttle drivers
By Steve Oko
There was eruption of joy in the commercial City of Aba, Abia State on weekend, as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Professor Greg Ibe, commenced distribution of free petrol to shuttle drivers.
The gesture, he said, was to cushion the effect of the biting economy on commercial drivers and their passengers.
Speaking with Wawa News Global, the APGA zonal Chairman Aba, Chief Lucky Erondu, said the aim of the exercise was to help the poor bus drivers to mitigate the effect of the rising cost of petrol.
“This is to show you how the leadership of APGA will be. If you go to Anambra where APGA is ruling, you will see it with your own eyes that APGA has always been a revolutionary party that is always setting development project on course adding that the beneficiaries should also reduce cost for their transport fares so that their passengers could also share in the good will.”
He, however, stressed that the gesture was not politically  motivated, as Professor Ibe had been known for philanthropy.
Erondu recalled that Professor Ibe recently flagged off Free Medical Outreach which saw the first round visiting all the 17 Local Government Areas in the state, hinting that the second round will soon commence.
He equally noted that Professor Ibe had been granting scholarship to many indigent students in his university, Gregory University Uturu.
” There is no end to his philanthropy; during COVID-19, he supplied many trailers of rice and Indomie noddles to Abians to cushion the effect of covid’19.
” So, Prof Ibe has not become emergency philanthropist because he wants to be governor. No, he is doing it out of his passion for the people.”
Meanwhile, some of the beneficiaries, including Mrs Patience Jim expressed their gratitude for the uncommon gesture.
” We thank Professor Ibe for remembering the poor. We want him to win so that we can experience change in Abia State especially in Aba because we have suffered here.”
Another beneficiary Mr Ifeanyi Okonkwo, likened Professor Ibe to the late President Mandela of South Africa, and prayed God to continue to bless him.
Mr Onyema Oji said he initially doubted it when his friend told him of it until he came and found out it was for real.
He prayed for the success of the governorship ambition of the APGA candidate.
Similarly, Chief Uzoagu a.k.a. Iwuobodo, said that Abia under the watch of Professor Ibe would look like Anambra State that is setting the pace in so many sectors.
He urged Abians to vote individuals and not party in the forthcoming elections.
“We are no longer voting parties but individual.  I will vote Peter Obi for President and Prof Greg for Governor and so will I choose others from even other parties. It doesn’t matter the party the person is, what matters is the capacity of the person in quote.”
In a remark,  Mr. Chimaobi Emeruwa said the gesture was to lesson the effect of the biting economy on shuttle drivers and their passengers in Aba.
“We are here for this shuttle drivers. We are helping to give them 10 litres of fuel each.  You see our road is not good, they are spending a lot of money to repair their vehicles, so we decided to help them.
“We can’t give them money but we decided to give them fuel so they can use to get money to help themselves and also repair their vehicles. I know my principal has good plans for Abians and I pray that God will give him life and abundant health to fulfill all his heart desires for Ndi Abia”.
