Breaking: Armed youths stop Greg Ibe’s free medical outreach in Osisioma
By Steve Oko
A  group of violent youths armed with weapons, Sunday, prevented a team of medics sent by Prof Gregory Ibe from holding a free medical and surgical outreach in Osisioma council of Abia State.
The fierce looking youths refused the 50-man medical team entry into the Abayi Council Hall, claiming that they had earlier booked the venue for a New Yam festival celebration.
According to the Coordinator of the Prof Gregory Ibe Medical and Surgical Outreach, Dr Ojum Ogwo, every plea by the team to allow the medics entry to the hall to attend to waiting patients who had gathered from various parts of the Council fell on deaf ears.
He said that  investigation revealed that the said youths’ event was actually scheduled for a date in September not that Sunday.
Despite the presence of many patients who had gathered from remote parts of Osisioma Local Government Area to benefit from the exercise, the youths frustrated every effort to resolve the issue, threatening that they were directed by a governorship candidate from Osisioma to attack the medical team if they insisted on continuing with the exercise.
Subsequently, the frustrated medical team  retreated to a safe haven in Aba, taking with them the medical supplies meant for Osisioma Local Government Area, to the disappointment of the hapless patients.
Wawa News Global reports that the  Gregory Ibe Free Medical and Surgical Outreach is a social intervention programme initiated by Ibe in 1991 to afford indigent members of the society opportunity of receiving solutions to their health challenges.
No fewer than 10,000 persons have benefited from the ongoing 2022 edition of the exercise.
According to the Coordinator, over 3,500 eye glasses have been distributed in 12 Local Government Areas so far covered since the exercise started in August.
