Sen Ohuabunwa seeks NEMA assistance for victims of Nkporo flood disaster
By Steve Oko
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has urged the Federal Government to direct the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to quickly come to the aid of the victims of flood disaster that sacked Agbaja, Okwoko and Ukwa Nkporo communities in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
Heavy flooding following a torrential rainfall over the weekend, wreaked havoc in the affected communities, sacking many homes and destroying property worth millions of Naira.
Food crops and economic trees were also not spared in the disaster as the Iyi Afia Orie River that passed through the communities to the neighbouring Ebonyi State overflew its banks sweeping away everything on its way.
Senator Ohuabunwa in a press statement, called on NEMA to deploy relief materials and drugs to the affected communities to mitigate the plights of the victims.
He expressed worry over the possible outbreak of diseases should Government fail to come to the rescue of the affected communities as the flood reportedly affected their sources of drinking water.
The former Leader ECOWAS Parliament who recalled that the communities also witnessed flood disaster not too long ago, urged the Federal Government to dredge the river that passed through the communities to avoid future occurrence.
He registered his sympathy with the affected communities and victims, promising to personally visit and empathise with them as soon as possible.
Ohuabunwa who had in 2018 donated relief materials to the communities during similar incident, appealed to public spirited individuals and corporate organisations to also come to their aid.
