CJN: Tanko out, Ariwoola in

Less than one week after Ikengaonline reports on the protest letter by Supreme Court Justices over their poor welfare, the
Justice Ariwoola
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammad has thrown in the towel.
President Muhammadu Buhari, has sworn in Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the Acting CJN.
Tanko’s sudden resignation is coming less than one week after a  protest letter by Supreme Court Justices over their poor welfare,
The former CJN cited health grounds as the rationale behind his resignation but judicial observers say the development might not be unconnected with the recent petition by Justices of the apex court.
Fourteen Justices of the apex court signed the petition against the former CJN who they accused of starving them of their welfare benefits and other entitlements despite increased budgetary allocations.
The Justices had accused the CJN of ignoring their repeated demand for improved welfare, despite the upward review of the budgetary allocation of the Judiciary.
Aside from the allegation that accommodation was not provided for new Justices that were sworn in since 2020, the aggrieved jurists accused the CJN of not allowing them to attend foreign training.
The justices also alleged that vehicles that were supplied to them were either refurbished or substandard.
Meanwhile, Justice Kayode Ariwoola, is set to replace the former CJN barring any last minute change by the National Judicial Council, NJC, set to recommend him.
Ikengaonline gathered from  reliable sources at the NJC that Justice Ariwoola in line with the age-long tradition in the bench would be filling in the gap.
Justice Ariwoola is the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court after the incumbent, Justice Tanko.
The tradition in the apex court is that where an incumbent CJN vacates office either by reason of death, retirement, resignation or sack, the next most senior judicial officer in the court takes over.
 Ariwoola sworn in
Justice Olukayade Ariwoola has been sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN.
His has replaced former CJN, Justice Ibrahim Tanko who resigned on health grounds.
Fourteen out of the 14 Justices of the Supreme Court had last week written a petition against the former CJN who they accused of toying with their welfare package.
They threatened to take a further action if the former CJN failed to take urgent action to remedy the situation.
Justice Ariwoola is the third person to be sworn in as CJN by President Buhari since he came to power in 2015.
Justice Walter Onnoghen was forced to resign before Buhari’s second term following allegations of financial misconduct.
