3-man delegate controversy: PDP may win elections in Abia, lose seats in court – Wachuku warns
By Steve Oko
Pioneer Director General of the National Directorate of Employment NDE, and a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State, Chief Chuku Wachuku, has cautioned the party to be ware of the far-reaching implications of conducting the party’s primaries without resolving the fuse over the three-man delegate election.
Wachuku who is contesting for the Abia Central senatorial ticket said that if the controversies were not amicably resolved PDP candidates in the state might win the 2023 election but lose their seats at the court.
He expressed fears that the state might suffer similar fate with Rivers and Zamfara States’ chapters of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in 2019, where the court later declared that the party had no candidates in the election.
Wachuku suggested that the PDP jettison the controversial three-man delegate congress and make do with statutory delegates only to avoid unnecessary litigations.
He expressed confidence he would win both the PDP ticket and the election but said he was afraid of losing the seat at the court.
“I’m a leading aspirant in Abia Central and I’m confident I will win because Abia Central is predominantly PDP but I don’t want to win the election and lose the seat.
” There is so much litigations here and there. I don’t want Zamfara situation here where after winning election then the court will throw you out.
” So, I want PDP to jettison the controversial three-man delegate and make use of statutory delegates.
Abia PDP is engulfed in crisis over the conduct of the exercise as some stakeholders accuse the party leadership of compiling lists of delegates without holding any election.
PDP Secretary, Mr David Iro was yesterday, suspended for publicly disagreeing with Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu who claimed the exercise had been successfully held while the Secretary maintained that it never held.
