Critical professional courses with limited admission chances in public schools topped the list as a fast-growing private university in South East, the Gregory University Uturu, Saturday, matriculated 484 students in its 10th Matriculation ceremony that coincided with the 10th anniversary of the institution founded by an industrialist, Professor Greg Ibe.
Pharmacy which is offered only in two public universities in South East with the highest admission seekers nation-wide came first with 64 students, followed by Nursing (59 students); while Medicine & Surgery, another course highly sought-after by admission seekers from South East, came third with 51 students.
Forty one students were admitted into the law programme of the institution, while the College of Engineering followed next with 32 fresh intakes.
Other critical courses that had a fair share in the admission quota include: Medical Laboratory Science (31); Radiology (16); Public Health, Microbiology, Accounting and Mass Communication.
Gregory university with special interest in entrepreneurial studies, has focused so much on key professional courses of study, thus making the emerging university a darling of many admission seekers from across the country in the recent years.
With its Teaching Hospital strategically located at Ezinnachi, near Okigwe on the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway nearing completion, Gregory University is expected to be a leading university in Nigeria in the Medical School.
The founder, Professor Ibe, a leading governoship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP for Abia 2023, has placed scores of indigent Abians as well as Intelligent students on scholarship in the university.
His desire for a literate Abia has also been the driving force behind his continued donation of books, computer sets and other reading materials to schools across the state .
Meanwhile, it was a carnival of sorts as the matriculants, their parents/ guardians, friends and well wishers thronged out in their numbers to catch a glimpse of the glamorous Matriculation ceremony that was also graced by academics from neighbouring universities as well as top Government functionaries and corporate bodies.
Addressing the new intakes, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Augustine Uwakwe, tasked the matriculants to focus on academic excellence and shun all forms of distractions associated with campus life.
The VC who said the university had zero tolerance for cultism, drug abuse and internet fraud, charged the students to eschew all forms of vices as anyone caught indulging in such abnormality will be decisively dealt with.
Professor Uwakwe who said the university was poised to break global records in many fields urged the students to take advantage of the entrepreneurial Centre in the Institution to acquire vocational skills for self reliance in addition to their certificate.
He said that the Institution had world-class facilities including library and laboratories with modern facilities comparable with those in any standard university in the world.
In a remark, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, described Gregory university as the fasted-growing university in the South East region, saying he is proud that the founder is an Abian who had shown capacity in many fields.
Ikpeazu who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Professor Anthony Agbazuere, urged the students to select their goal in life and pursue same with undevided single mindedness.
The governor who commended the university management for its special attention to entrepreneurial studies urged the staff to complement the efforts of the Chancellor by putting in their best despite the challenges of working in the private sector.
