The Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, has urged Government to fix Primary Health Centres so as to reduce pressure on the Secondary and tertiary health Institutions.
Chairman, NMA, Abia State, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, who made the appeal when he accompanied Senator Theodore Orj on inspection tour of Ukome Ibeku Primary Health Centre attracted by the senator, explained that without a functional primary health care system, people at the grass root would be at the mercy of avoidable deaths.
He commended Senator Orji for the project which he said would help to solve the health challenges of the people in the area when fully delivered.
Expressing delight at the size of the health centre which he said was like a cottage hospital, the NMA boss promised to synergise with the Senator and Government to ensure the people get the best of medical services when the project becomes operational.
Senator Orji in a remark, expressed satisfaction at the level of work at the site, assuring that the Centre would be fully equipped to become operational in the weeks ahead.
” I’m glad that this project has been completed. We are now at the verge of bringing staff to work in this centre to provide health care services for my constituents at the grass root.
” I decided to site this project here to make them have a sense of belonging and to help bring good health care delivery system closer to them”.
The former governor said he had renovated the Primary School close to the health centre and sunk a water bore hole to further alleviate the challenges of the people in the area.
He said he had also built similar health centre at Umudike, adding that he has “at least three projects either or on-going or completed” in each of the six Local Government Areas in the district.
Senator Orji later commissioned a 12-classroom block he built at Amakpu Ntigha Community Primary School, Isiala Ngwa North; after inspecting other projects in some commuunities including a six classroom block at Ossa Ibeku Primary School, Olokoro, Ikwuano, and a health facility at Umuariaga.
