Hon. Chukwudi Apugo representing Umuahia East State consituency at the Abia State House of Assembly, Wednesday, distributed wrappers, cows and cash to his constituents at Nkata Ibeku Community.
He distributed 2000 wrappers to women of Nkata Ibeku Community and gave N1.5 million cash to be distributed to youths into skill acquisition as well as those who have challenges of clearing their school fees.
The lawmaker gave two cows to men of his native Nkata Community while his younger brother, Victor Apugo (Ngwongwo), added another cow bringing the number to three cows.
He explained that he had stopped giving cash to men to avoid abuse as some of them use it to buy liquor instead of attending to the needs of their family.
Stranger elements were not left out of the annual gesture as they got a cow and N200,000 cash.
Addressing the mammoth crowd of over 1000 that gathered in his compound for the exercise, Apugo said the gesture was borne out of his desire to put smiles on the lips of his constituents this season.
He said he had passion to positively affect lives and make people’s condition better.
The two-term lawmaker who noted that he had sustained the annual gesture since the 12 years regretted that it could not hold last year due to his mother’s death.
He urged the people especially the youths to believe in themselves and aspire to be a success in life.
Hon. Apugo also advised against indolence and waywardness among youths.
Drawing from his personal experience, the lawmaker said his survival was not a function of his background but God’s grace and his enterprising spirit.
He cautioned the youths against hard drugs particularly ‘mkpurumiri’which he said had ruined the future of many youths.
Apugo also assured stranger elements in his constituency and adequate recognition, promising not to discriminate against anybody.
Responding, Nkata women leader, Mrs. Roseline Osondu showered praises on the lawmaker for the gesture, and prayed God to bless him.
Speaking on behalf of the male folks, Mr. Sunday Osondu described Apugo as an illustrious son of Nkata with overflowing milk of human kindness.
He urged him to sustain the tempo.
In a remark, Mr. Chukwuemeka Aguiyi poured encomiums on Apugo for facilitating a university scholarship for his daughter not minding that he (Aguiyi) worked against the political interest of the lawmaker during the 2019 elections.
Chairman of non-indigens living in Nkata Ibeku, Mr. Kingsley Uwakwe who spoke on behalf of the stranger elements, applauded Apugo for the gesture.
He extolled his humanitarian gestures which he said “does not discriminate against strangers”.
Uwakwe recalled how the lawmaker picked the medical bill of the child of a non indigene who had an emergency medical condition earlier in the year.
He also commended Apugo for extending political appointments to non indigenes.
