Abia should sustain power rotation without compromising merit – Madukwe
By Steve Oko
The Managing Director of the Nigeria Film Corporation, NFC, Jos, Dr. Chidia Madukwe, has strongly advocated that Abia should sustain its power rotation arrangement in 2023 but without compromise to merit.
The All Progressive Congress, APC Chieftain who stated this in a media chat with Vanguard, noted that power rotation is necessary to ensure cohesion and inclusiveness in the polity.
He argued that although merit should not be sacrificed on the altar of zoning, Nigeria’s peculiar circumstance required that no zone should be shortchanged as competent persons are in every place.
His words: ” There is no place you cannot find merit. You have people of merit in all the zones. Anything that will make leadership domicile in a particular location will bring tension.
“I therefore think that for peace and orderliness to prevail, the already established order of rotation should be sustained. But we won’t compromise merit on the altar of zoning.
” However, for the purpose of all inclusiveness, we shall ensure that zoning will continue.”
Dr. Maduekwe also argued that it would be proper for the principle of zoning and power rotation to be applied at the centre.
” Nigeria has guided democracy because of our unique characteristics, antecedents and current situation. We are trying to find ourselves in a cohesive manner so we can have one strong country.
” We want a situation whereby we have an understanding among the zones in a manner that will promote cohesiveness for the purpose good governance.
” The fathers of the current democracy took care of that and came up with zoning arrangement. It’s a gentleman arrangement and we need to sustain it”.
