ASUU suspends 9 months strike
By Steve Oko
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has finally suspended its nine month-old strike that has almost paralyzed the university system in Nigeria.
The suspension was announced at a press conference held Wednesday morning in Abuja.
ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, who led other National Executive Committee of the union to the press conference, explained that the suspension takes effect from today, Wednesday 23, 2020.
The decision to suspend the prolonged industrial action, according to the ASUU boss, followed the resolution to that effect by NEC at its meeting earlier in the day.
ASUU had among others demands presses for adequate funding for universities in the country.
It also demanded government to honour various agreements earlier reached with the body for an improved welfare of lecturers.
ASUU equally protested the migration of its members to IPPIS payment platform, arguing that such policy negates university autonomy.
It came with its own alternative payment platform which government said it was still trying for authenticity.
