Health Minister, NCDC boss laud Abia professionals for extra step to combat covid -19

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adeleke Mamora; and the Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, respectively, have lauded the uncommon efforts of Abia professionals in stemming the spread coronavirus pandemic in the state.

The made the commendation Sunday during the commissioning of the Abia Care Centre, an isolation centre for the treatment of infectious diseases at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia.

The 50-bed ultra modern medical centre with NCDC -approved molecular laboratory was built and equipped by Concerned Abia Professionals, CAP, and donated to the hospital management.

Speaking at the event, the elated Minister described the initiative of the concerned Abians as very patriotic and unseen anywhere in the country.

He said the gesture was a celebration of partnership between the private and the public sectors, and promised that the federal government would reciprocate such exemplary efforts.

In his own remarks the NCDC boss said such demonstration of patriotism by the people provokes government to complement the people’s efforts.

He said such gesture was the spirit of the people of old who never depended on government but undertook people oriented projects through communal efforts.

The NCDC boss noted that covid -19 would have recorded more casualties in Nigeria but for some stringent and painful steps taken by the government taskforce against the pandemic.

He however, regretted that Nigerians were not appreciative of the efforts of the taskforce and his agency in stemming the spread of the pandemic in the country.

Speaking at the event, Gov Okezie Ikpeazu commended the concerned professionals behind the project, confessing that it was the first time Abians of various political divides would come together to undertake a common project of public importance.

The governor who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, said Abia had so far recorded 909 confirmed covid -19 cases out of which 810 cases had been successfully managed and dischargeed.

According to him the active cases in the state currently is 10.

Earlier in her address, the vision bearer, Mrs. Ngozi Ekeoma, said the gesture was borne out of the need to reduce casualty figure of covid -19 and other infectious diseases in the state.

She commended all Abians who keyed into the project, and expressed delight that the centre would be always available to handle any outbreak of infectious disease in the state.

Chairman of the Implementation Committee, Mr Johnson Chukwu, disclosed that 180 Abians raised N98 million for the over N120 million project which was delivered in 47 days.

He commended the Nigeria Sovereign Wealth Investment and other public -spirited friends for donating some medical equipment to the centre.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Dr. Alex Otti, Rep Samson Onuigbo, were among many prominent Abians present at the event.
