Abia PDP must avoid Rivers, Zamfara APC blunder – Ohuabunwa

By Steve Oko

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa who represented Abia North senatorial district in the eight senate, has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state to avoid the mistake that consumed the All Progressive Congress, APC in both Rivers and Zamfara States in the 2019 elections.

The former Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament gave the advice weekend in his Arochukwu country home while addressing the Ward Chairmen, council executive members and some stakeholders of PDP over the leadership tussle rocking the party in the LGA.

Senator Ohuabunwa who said PDP in the council was not divided, however explained that the doctoring of the list of successful candidates who emerged at the party’s LGA congress had generated ill feelings among party faithful.

He strongly condemned the action which he said was perpetrated by some “chameleons” in the party whose interest was to destroy PDP before formerly defecting to the other party they had been secretly working for.

Ohuabunwa said his love for PDP compelled him to speak out against the grave injustice which, according to him, is capable of consuming the entire PDP in the state.

He said that as a major stakeholder in the party, he could not afford to keep sealed lips over such obvious injustice, hence his resolve to caution PDP on the far reaching implications of the anomaly.

According to him the dubious adoption of some party officials who are not products of party congress portends grave danger for the party as some persons can institute legal action against the outcome of any activity conducted by such illegal officials.

This, he warned was the undoing of the APC in both Rivers and Zamfara States in the 2019 polls.

Recall that Hon Anthony Nwankwo emerged the PDP Chairman of the April 14 LGA congress but was later substituted with Sunday Okemini, an action that triggered a legal fireworks as the matter is now pending at the state high court Umuahia.

Other affected elected officials who were also later shortchanged were the Deputy Chairman, Anthony Okoro, replaced with Francis Okoro ; the Secretary, Kalu Okechukwu Peters substituted with Margaret John ; Woman Leader, Ugoeze Otusi replaced with Nene Nwokoro; and Youth Leader, Godwin Ogbonnaya, substituted with Nkochi Agada.

Senator Ohuabunwa, expressed his support for the shortchanged candidates in their decision to seek redress in court, arguing that injustice to one is injustice to all.

He however, acknowledged that the governor remained the Leader of the party in the state, and should he at any time decide to wade into the matter, he urged all the aggrieved persons to be willing to listen to the governor.

” I want to correct the wrong impression that PDP in Arochukwu is in crisis. PDP here is one. What happened was that after the LGA congress witnessed by INEC, some people went behind and doctored the list of successful candidates.

” This is the injustice that those who went to court are fighting. This does not in any way mean that they took the party to court as erroneously viewed by some. They only want to save the party from the kind of embarrassment that destroyed APC in Rivers and Zamfara.

“I don’t believe in injustice and violence. People will blame me if as a senior PDP stakeholder I keep quiet and the party enters into this trap. We are only trying to save the party from disaster because if these illegal officials participate in any PDP congress anybody including the opposition can approach the court and upturn it.”

“The governor is the only Leader of PDP in the state and if he invites us tomorrow and says he wants to settle the matter we will listen to him, but for now he has not invited us. ”

Senator Ohuabunwa, therefore, urged the party stakeholders in Arochukwu to remain united and loyal to the party so as to consolidate the gains of the party in the LGA.

He urged the party leaders not to allow greedy politicians with double loyalty to ruin the party in the area, promising to continue to provide support and direction for the party.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Joint Project, Chief JJ Okoro also thanked Ohuabunwa for his timely intervention, insisting that injustice should not be allowed in the party.

He described Ohuabunwa as the “indisputable leader” of PDP in the area, urged all party faithful to strive to work for the progress of the party.

Some of the stakeholders present at the meeting were the Abia North zonal woman leader of the party, Mrs. Priscilla Umeghalu; former Council chairmen, Princely Kingsley Ngunu, and James Kalu; Special Adviser to the Governor, Chief Felix Ukpabi; Sir Isaac Nkole; and Chief Patrick Ikpo Okwara.
