Sen Ohuabunwa clears air on controversy over federal projects in Abia North
By Steve Oko
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP) who represented Abia North in the 8th Senate, has cleared the air on claims and counter claims over who attracted the federal projects currently being executed in Abia North.
He explained that all on-going projects in the zone were those either captured in the 2018 or 2019 budgets contrary to fictitious claims in some quarters that they are 2020 projects.
Ohuabunwa said the clarification had become necessary following claims by some political desperadoes and their foot soldiers who want to take credit for what they were not part of.
The former Speaker ECOWAS Parliament in a press release said that the federal government had not awarded any single project in the zone based on the 2020 budget.
“Anybody in doubt should verify from the National Assembly if any single project in the 2020 budget has been awarded “, he said, adding that “anyone claiming to have attracted the federal projects being currently executed in the zone is a serial liar”.
According to him all the federal projects in the zone some of which were suspended or abandoned but now resumed, had already been captured in the 2018 or 2019 budgets.
The former Senate Committee Chairman on Primary Health and Communicable diseases, further explained that some contractors handling some of the projects returned to site after receiving more funds from the federal government, while some who had previously absconded had to come back for fear of the anti graft agency.
He insisted that all federal projects including those by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, currently being executed in the zone were those already captured in the 2018 and 2019 budgets when he was at the red chamber.
Ohuabunwa who insisted that no project in the 2020 budget had been awarded, urged the people to disregard “anybody trying to lay claims to projects he did not attract”.
According to him, the federal government has not considered any project in the current budget which it had hinted would be scalled down following the fall in crude oil price as a result of the covid-19 pandemic.
Senator Ohuabunwa who expressed shock over what he called “blatant lies of political desperadoes to take glory of what they didn’t do”, urged the people not to fall prey to such antics.
” My joy is that Abia North knows who was their senator and those in the national assembly when the 2018 and 2019 budgets were passed, and anybody trying to take credit for the projects captured in those budgets is a deceiver and a serial liar “, he said.
