12years prison sentence given to Orji Uzo Kalu – What next for ndi Abia north?
Written by Comrade Chigozie Daniel
I have heard and read many comments since the judgement that emanated from Federal High Court in Lagos convicted and sentenced Orji Uzo Kalu to 12years imprisonment for a fraud he committed during his days as Abia state governor. But the summary of all the comments as follows:
1. Majority opined that he actually stole funds made for development of Abia state and thereby deserve punishment.
2. Some sympathizers posited that he is not the only politician to steal fund, others said he was convicted because he is from Igbo(meaning that he actually stole fund).
In all, I was vindicated in my earlier articles(“Recall OUK now – Save us further embarrassment part 1&2”). I made it clear that ouk sitting as a senator with the magnitude of fraud charges against him, will portray a negative image of the Nigerian Senate to the entire world and questions the collective intelligence and moral obligation of ndi Abia north and Abia state at large.
However, I am not going to dwell much on people’s comments especially sentiments. The motive behind this article is to awaken the consciousness of patriotic and well meaning Abia north indigenes, the government and people of Abia state, Nigerian Senate, Civil Society Organisations, Political/Right activists, men and women of good conscience, to support the patriotic and noble cause of advancing our democracy and total condemnation of corrupt politicians in government. We can not sacrifice our collective national cake(dividend of democracy), and our dignity as a people on the alter of a self inflicted predicament of corrupt politicians. Abia north is too vocal to be voiceless, We can not be represented in a such a vital political office from Ikoyi prison.
Though he has the right to appeal the judgement of the Federal High Court, we have not forgotten so fast that the fraud charges which Orji Uzo Kalu was convicted of, started since 2007 and had gone up to the supreme court where Orji Uzo Kalu lost in his bid to stop the charges against him by EFCC.
In a civilised nation where moral value and norms are being respected, Orji Uzo Kalu wouldn’t have stood for an election to the hallowed chamber if not cleared of the fraud charges.
We have the chance to redeem our moral value by demanding that Orji Uzo Kalu vacate the Abia north senatorial seat for INEC to do the needful in accordance with the extant law and constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria in respect to the criteria for declaring a senatorial seat vacant.
All hands must be on desk to mount pressure on the appropriate authorities to declare the seat vacant and save Abia north constituents from not having a representative at the 9th Senate.
THE TIME IS NOW.
