Ex-gov Kalu’s conviction, ‘dark cloud for Abia North’ – former aide

* Urges senate Whip  to resign or risk recall
By  Steve Oko
The conviction and jailing of Abia former governor and senator representing Abia North senatorial district, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has been described as “a sad development and dark cloud for Abia North”.
Kalu was Thursday sentenced to 12 years in prison by Justice Mohammed Idris of the Lagos Federal High Court following his conviction on N7.2 billion fraud charges.
kalu’s former Special Adviser  on  Political Affairs and a front line Political Analyst, Chief Amah Abraham who stated this while reacting to the development said that Abia North was the worst loser.
He, therefore, urged the Senate Chief Whip to honourably  resign his position as a senator of the Federal Republic “if truly he loves Abia North” so that the zone could elect another senator who can represent them” at the red chamber.
Kalu’s former Aide who said the former governor “was not supposed to stand for election in the first place having known that he was not popular”,  advised him to be courageous enough to resign from the senate “if truly he loves the people as he claims”.
He argued that  it would be more honourable for Kalu to first resign before appealing the judgment as his lawyer had hinted to save the zone the agony of staying without a representative at the senate while the appeal drags on “with Kalu in prison”.
His words : “If he goes to appeal he will only slow down the wheel of progress as that can drag on for about another year.
“The implication is that Abia North will have nobody at  the senate to follow up projects for the zone in the budget.
“But if he feels he likes Abia North he should willingly resign so that Abia North will not be without a representative at the senate. And he may  enjoy the sympathy  of the people while pursuing his appeal as a private citizen.
“If he makes Abia North to be without a senator it shows he does not love them and is only after his personal interest.
“Abia North needs to be represented at the senate and his personal interest should not overide the interest of the entire zone.
“But if he refuses to voluntarily  resign , we will start the process of his recall because the entire zone cannot suffer for the sin of one man. We have many competent hands  from both APC and PDP as well as other political parties who can represent the people very well.
“As a person I feel for him and pray that he comes out of the prison without any health challenge but he should put the interest of the zone ahead of his personal gains by bowing out voluntarily “.
The former Council boss insisted that if the senator refuses to honourably resign the constituents would be left with no option than to immediately commence the process of his recall .
“If he fails to do the needful, we will go to INEC to demand his recall and ask the senate to declare his seat vacant “, he vowed.
