From Maurice Okafor, Enugu.
Enugu based legal practitioner and former lawyer to the Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra , IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Vincent Obetta has revealed Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s role in securing bail for Kanu after he was detained in Kuje prison by the federal government.
Obeta, made the revelation at Christ Redemption Church within Enugu Campus of the University of
Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), while speaking at a combined church service in honour of the immediate past deputy senate president by the school authority, his Alma mater

He stated,’ When I got bail from the magistrate court as well as high court for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, I noticed that
it was going to be difficult for him to be released and I became frustrated. But at that point, the only option left for me was to resort to Igbo leaders and most of the Igbo leaders I approached for help did not listen to me until I picked courage to go to Ekweremadu’.
Obeta said he explained to the former Deputy senate President the situation and the implication of continous detention of Nnamdi Kanu on Ndigbo, and he agreed to help.
“Once I got the two bails at the Magistrate and High Courts, it was so obvious that
the Federal Government was not going to release Nnamdi Kalu or to
obey the court judgment in that respect.
“I became very frustrated and I had to resort to Igbo leaders. All the while I was
doing it alone. But unfortunately, most of the persons I reached out to did not
listen to me until I contacted Ekweremadu and Orji Uzor Kalu. That was
when Ekweremadu threw caution to the wind and graciously agreed to help.
According to Obetta, Ekweremadu quickly called a meeting of South East National Assembly Committee, which enhanced Nnamdi Kanu’s bail.
His words, ‘I decided to say this in this church because, I do not want to be seen as the ostrich,
and moreover, we have a cache of people here who, I felt, needed to know what
really happened at the time.
“I was always in touch with him and I know all that happened at the time. I have
documents about the money that was paid and a copy of Ekweremadu’s letter to
the President, Muhammadu Buhari. I also have a copy of his second letter which brought
a lot of envy and attack on him the former DSP, yet, rather than appreciate
him, we turn around to attack him.
“I feel so guilty at what is happening to Ekweremadu, especially the Nuremberg, Germany
attack, because I was the one that went to him and dragged him into the matter.
So, I contributed to subjecting him to the unfortunate embarrassment.
“We know what Ekweremadu has been doing for Ndigbo; most of our leaders at Ohanaeze
Ndigbo and South East Governors Forum, appreciate that he has done quite a lot
for Ndigbo,” Barr Obetta said.
Meanwhile the Enugu residence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu located at Independence layout Enugu, has since Friday afternoon, August 23,when he was welcomed into a Enugu by a mammoth crowd comprising of his political loyalists, government officials, kinsmen, the Ohanaeze Youth wing from five states of the South East zone, benefactors of Ikeoha Foundation. his educational pet project and other members of the public.
Several groups joined in his long convoy from the Akanu Ibiam international airport to his residence at Upper Presidential road,Independence layout, where he eventually addressed the masses. Earlier in their various speeches, the Youth wing of Ohanaeze from the five states of the South East zone, pleaded with Senator Ekweremadu to forgive the IPOB members who were involved in his Germany attack, stating most of them were not in tune with Igbo sacred culture for the Elders and leaders.
Some of the important groups outside the political class that has compelled beehive of activities on Enugu residence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu over the weekend included the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists[NAWOJ] Enugu state chapter, who visited him and his wife Dr Mrs Nwanneka Ekweremadu, on Saturday August 24, with an appeal to Dr Mrs Ekweremadu to support some of their projects against social vices like child rape, discrimination against women etc in the society.
NAWOJ equally condemned the attack on Ekweremadu by some members of IPOB in Germany and decried high rate of insecurity in the country.
Responding,Senator Ekweremadu re instated his view that decentralizing the Nigeria policing system is a panacea to curtailing high rate of crime and insecurity in the country.
His words, “I am also advocating and I will like to join the advocacy of a decentralized policing, but the truth of the matter is that crime in Nigeria is growing forward because of the structure of our policing”.
“Nigeria is the only country in the world that the system of government is in centralized policing. We don’t have it anywhere in the world, and it will never work until we get it right”.
“The only thing that can deal with the issue of security in Nigeria is for us to move away from the type of policing we have today, to a decentralized policing, where at least the sub national government will have their own police set up then will be able to bear their security challenges he said”.
“We should have State police which will help us deal with criminalities that is almost eaten up our country.
A State will have a number of police they required to deal with the challenges they have in time of security and issues of rape will be dealt with, the governor will be the chief security officer with appropriate checks and balance to avoid accuse”.
“Some of us while we advocate an increase in the legal regime of governing matters to that rape, I believe that the most important thing is the enforcement of an existing laws on that subject. We should be able to have enough police women because there are some places men cannot go and started questioning on matters, he said.
The wife of the former senate president Mrs Nwanneka Ekweremmadu in her address assured the Nigeria Women of Journalist the Ikeoha foundation partnership with the association to avert the social vices, especially in the issue of girl child rape that is on the increase in the country.
