Revealed !!! How Abia govt spends N28 million monthly on one public school with only 376 staff, 500 students
By Steve Oko
It has been revealed that Abia State Government spends a whopping N28 million on College of Education Technical, Arochukwu which has only 376 staff.
Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu who made the chilling revelation in a chat with Wawa News Global, said the fund was released to the institution as monthly subvetion.
Okiyi further fumed that more annoying was the fact that the tertiary institution with students population of about 500 is also demanding that the subvetion be jacked up to N50 million per month.
He said Government should not be held responsible for the inability of the management of the institution to regularly pay its workers.
The Commissioner said the management of the institution should be able to generate ideas on how to shore up their internally generated revenue to stay afloat instead of expecting to be spoon -fed by government.
Okiyi equally expressed displeasure over the “mess” in Abia Polytechnic following months of unpaid workers’ wages.
Even though he absolved the current management of the institution for “the mess “, Kalu said the state government should not be expected to keep spending scarce resources on the institution when the management fails to come up with strategies to fix the challenges.
He noted that apart from approving a lump sum of N2 billion to the institution from the N14.5 billion bail out for the off setting of its bad debt, the state government has also consistently released N90 million monthly subvetion to Abia Poly.
The Commissioner regretted that due to lack of vision and strategic planning the institution has continued to lose its hithertho teeming student population to a private institution in Aba.
He said “Abia Poly is over staffed ” with dwindling student population and rising wage bill, a development he declared could no longer be tolerated by government.
The Commissioner challenged both managements of Abia Poly, and College of Education Technical Arochukwu, to emulate the management of Abia State University Uturu, which he said, had been consistent in payment of workers’ salary.
He commended the Professor Uche Ikonne -led management team of ABSU which he said had transformed the institution without depending on government.
” ABSU in the last four years has not recorded any strike since Ikonne came on board “
