Finally, Onnoghen resigns as CJN

After months of tension and controversy over the unilateral suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari , the CJN, Friday afternoon tendered his resignation.

His resignation which is with immediate effect followed the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, NJC, for his compulsory retirement.

NJC, Thursday submitted its report to the President for the necessary action.

TheCable reported that” ‘he turned in his resignation letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday evening, a day after the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended that he be compulsorily retired for misconduct.’

Onnoghen the only Southerner to be appointed CJN after many decades the position was held by a Southerner is still facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal for non declaration of assets.
