Ex-PDP ex-chairman, Nwaka joins APC
By Steve Oko
Last is yet to be heard of the gale of defection that has hit the Abia State chapter of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a former Chairman of the party, Senator Emma Nwaka, has joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Senator Nwaka who represented Abia North district in the second republic, had in June 2024 resigned his membership of the PDP but kept mute over his next political platform.
Wawa News Global reports that Nwaka, who led the Abia PDP between 2010 and 2015 also sought the governorship ticket of the party in 2023.
Senator Nwaka’s high-profile defection to the APC came to the fore after a viral picture showing him receiving APC membership card in his Oguduasa Ward 5, in Isuikwuato, surfaced.
In the photograph trending on social media, Nwaka was seen being presented with APC party card by the APC Chairman for Oguduasa Ward 5, Chief Sampson Achi Ndukwe.
The APC Chairman for Isuikwuato Local Government, Chief Udochi Okorie and other party officials were also sighted in the viral photograph.
Although efforts to reach the former PDP Chairman to confirm his defection to APC were unsuccessful, one of his aides said he had moved to the “national ruling party”.
The aide who did not want to be mentioned said the former PDP Chairman would, on a later date, publicly speak about his defection.
He said:”Yes the picture you saw was real; it was not AI generated. Distinguished (Senator Nwaka) will eventually bare his mind to the public on this momentous event in the fullness of time”.
Abia PDP was hit by a gale of defection since the party lost to the ruling Labour Party in 2023.
Some of the prominent members of the party who had defected to the APC include the immediate-past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji; former Deputy Speaker and a PDP presidential aspirant in 2023, Dr Cosmos Ndukwe; former Chief of Staff to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Professor Anthony Agbazuere; former Information Commissioner, Eze Chikamnayo, among a host of others.
Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has been very instrumental in wooing prominent Abia politicians to the national ruling party.
He had mid-last year, predicted that Gov. Alex Otti would be the last LP Governor in the state, a remark that however, sparked political fireworks in the state.
Gov. Otti had since denied of any move to dump LP, although the November 2024 council poll in the state was swept by little-known Zenith Labour Party, thus fueling speculations that the Governor might be hatching ‘plan B’ following the crisis in LP.
