Abia set to host 2025 para badminton championship in Umuahia

Abia State Government has affirmed its readiness to host the first Abia State para-Badminton international and African championship in the state.
Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Mr Nwaobilor Ananaba, announced this while receiving a team of international officials who were in the state for inspection of facilities for the championship.
The Commissioner appreciated the officials for coming to ascertain the level of preparations for the event.
He described it as an honour for the state to host the international championship and said that Abia is a home for para Badminton.
The Commissioner pointed out that Abia is a home to para Badminton in Nigeria through the contribution of Ekeoma Samuel who nurtured and brought para Badminton to light.
He said:“Today, Nigeria is among the para Badminton medalists at the just concluded paralympic games in Paris,” Mr Ananaba stated.
The Commissioner also lauded Governor Alex Otti’s administration for intentionally supporting the youth and sports development in the state .
In his speech, the President para Badminton Federation, Mr Francis Orbhil, said that Abia state had contributed so well in the development of para Badminton in Nigeria.
He commended Governor Otti for his support for the various sporting activities especially the para Badminton.
Wawa News Global reports that the inspection which started on November 28, 2024 will run till December 2, 2024.
The State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George; Directors in the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, and members of the para Badminton federation of Nigeria were among the dignitaries that accompanied the inspection team.
