Day Uburu stood still for Abia 1st civilian gov, Ogbonnaya Onu

Uburu, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on  November 8, played host to dignitaries as the first civilian Governor of Abia State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, was accorded the final respect by family members, friends and well wishers.

The ceremony marked the end of a week-long activities lined up for the final rites of the elder statesman and former Minister of Science and Technology.

The Catholic Bishop of the Owerri Diocese who conducted the funeral mass held at Christ the King Catholic Church Uburu, Archbishop Lucious Ugorji, in his homily, urged people to always live with the realisation that they would face death.
“Our Son and father has ran his own race and such is destiny of every mortal” he said

President Bola Tinubu represented by the Minister of Works, David Umahi described the late Dr Onu as a true progressive in political ideology, a brilliant administrator and a politician who was passionate about the development of Nigeria and the South East region of the country.

Governor Francis Nwifurum of Ebonyi State speaking on behalf of Governors of the South East zone, says Dr Onu’s contributions to national and regional growth will remain an indelible mark in the annals of Nigeria and particularly his home State of Ebonyi.

Accompanied by close family members and other mourners, the body of the former Minister was moved to his compound by the Apams Funeral where it was interred after brief religious rites at the grave side.

Among dignitaries that graced the burial ceremony includes National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate Peter Obi, Enugu Governor, Peter Mbah and his Abia State Colleague, Alex Otti, as well as prominent Igbo political, economic and religious leaders.

The late Dr Christopher Ogbnnaya Onu 72, was a teacher, author and politician who was elected as the first Civilian Governor of the old Abia State, and later served for two terms as Nigeria’s minister of Science and Technology under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
