Abia to benefit from EU solar for health project, approves running cost for sch heads
By Steve Oko
Abia State has been selected among the five pilot states in the country to benefit from European Union, EU-sponsored Solar for Health project.
This is as the State Government has approved funds for monthly running cost for Heads of primary and secondary schools in the state.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who announced this during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting, said the decision was to stop imposition of illegal fees on pupils and students in public schools by school heads.
He said the measure was in continuation of the on-going education revolution of the Governor. Alex Otti-led administration, which has for the first time since the history of the state, met the 20% budgetary threshold for Education.
The Commissioner also said that a total of 124 road projects had so far been delivered by the Otti-led administration.
Most of the completed road projects according to him, are in Aba and Umuahia.
He hinted that the Ndoki road project in Ukwa would be inaugurated in November, adding that a number of other road projects in Abia, are nearing completion.
The Commissioner explained that the Otti administration decided to give special attention to road infrastructure as a pillar of development to open up every part of the state for investors.
He also said that over 4,500 solar panels had been installed in Aba and Umuahia in continuation of the ‘Operation Light Up Abia’.
On the EU solar project, he said that the State would provide 30% of the counterpart funding while EU would provide the balance of 70%.
Contributing, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, who also doubles as the Chairman of the taskforce on registration of tricycles and commercial buses, urged owners of tricycles and busses to comply with Government directive on registration before the deadline.
He restated that the registration which is aimed at checkmating crime, is still at no cost to the tricycle or bus owners.
Responding to an inquiry, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, said that the State Government was aware of some challenges in the payment of pension, and advised pensioners with complaints to approach the desk office established at the Office of the Accountant General of the State for attention.
