Old Eastern Nigeria elders storm Nnamdi Kanu’s home, pray for his release

By Steve Oko

Elders from Old Eastern Nigeria comprising Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Delta and the five states in the South East geo-political zone, Tuesday, converged at the Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku Umuahia country home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to pray for his release.

The elders who said they came to solidarise with Kanu, and pray for a favourable outcome of his court appearance in Abuja, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to consider the various pleas for his release.

Speaking with Vanguard on behalf of the elders, the National President of Elders of Old Eastern Nigeria, Chief Innocent Orji, said they were deeply concerned about the plights of Kanu especially his reported failing health.

He said that Kanu who he described as a worthy son of the region, is unjustly persecuted for demanding justice for his people.

He pleaded with President Tinubu to heed the growing appeals for Kanu’s release to help dounce tension in the region.

Chief Orji said that contrary to misconceptions in some quarters, Kanu is not a terrorist nor the cause of Nigeria’s woes but part of the solution.

Adding his voice, the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the group, Chief Akuku Umoessien, pleaded with the judiciary to take into cognizance the implications of Kanu’s continued incarceration, and set him free in the overall interest of the country.

He argued that contrary to assumptions by some people, Kanu is not fighting Igbo cause but seeks justice for the oppressed people of the Old Eastern region in particular, and all indigenous people of Nigeria in general.

Chief Umoessien, particularly appealed to President Tinubu to consider Kanu’s release as a gift to the entire Old Eastern region.

He also urged the President to address the various issues raised by Kanu and other agitators of self determination to regain the confidence of various ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.

According to him, only dialogue and not confrontation or use of force against various agitators in the country, will help foster national unity and cohesion.

The Elders who were decked in the traditional Isiagu (lion head) attire, made prayers for Kanu’s release at the graveside of his late parents, HRM Eze Israel Kanu, and his wife, Ugoeze Sally Kanu.
