Prof Nduka solicits men’s support for exclusive breastfeeding
By Steve Oko
Fathers have been urged to consciously encourage and fully support their wives to exclusively feed their babies with breast milk.
Chief Medical Director, CMD, Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba, Professor Ijeoma Nduka, who made the call while sensitising nursing mothers on the gains of breast milk, said breast milk remains the best formula for babies.
Professor Nduka announced 50% discount of child delivery bills for all babies delivered at the hospital during the week.
She said the gesture which was part of the hospital’s efforts to promote exclusive breastfeeding, was also a unique way to mark this year’s World Breastfeeding week.
The CMD who said the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding “are enormous”, admonished mothers to introduce their newborn babies to breast milk.
Harping on the gains of breast milk, the Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine, described as “exceptional and unquantifiable”, the health benefits of breastfeeding.
The CMD frowned at the attitude of some young mothers who prefer feeding their babies with food supplements to breast milk especially in the first six months .
Professor Nduka urged nursing mothers to strictly adhere to the World Health Organization’s stipulation of ensuring that their newborn babies are exclusively breastfed during the first six months after birth.
She explained that no other man-made alternatives or supplements possessed similar nutrients like breast milk.
The CMD reassured nursing mothers of the preparedness of the hospital under her watch, to support them at all times.
Free insecticide-treated bed nets, were later distributed to the nursing mothers courtesy of the hospital.
ABSUTH which almost became moribund few years ago, has rebounced since the Gov. Alex Otti -led administration came on board.
