American Military Veterans of Igbo Decent, AVID, have written an open letter to Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja, demanding justice and respect for the constitution over the trial of the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
AVID, in the letter expressed deep worry over the deteriorating health condition of Kanu, and the proceedings of his trial.
The US veterans, in the letter jointly signed by the President, Chief Dr Sylvester Onyia; and Secretary, Dr Godson Obiagwu, respectively, urged Justice Nyako to obey the Supreme Court judgment on Kanu.
Describing the IPOB Leader as “prisoner of conscience”, AVID urged Justice Nyako to reconsider her refusal to grant Kanu’s please to be transferred to the Kuje prison instead of being detained endlessly at the Department of State Services, DSS, solitary cell.
The US military veterans expressed worry over the Judge’s refusal to grant Kanu’s bail application and plea to be transferred to the Correctional Centre instead of the solitary confinement at the Abuja headquarters of the Department of State Services DSS where he
Kanu has remained at the DSS detention facility since June 2021 when he was abducted in Kenya and extraordinarily rendition to Nigeria.
A copy of the AVID letter made available to newsmen read in part: “The judge’s refusal to comply with the Supreme Court judgment and the lack of
willingness to interprete the constitution fairly are truly embarrassing and humiliating for the judicial system, Nigeria, and the whole world.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should have been
taken to a correctional center, not kept in a federal government privately owned detention center where his conversations with his lawyers and family members are always monitored.
“The judge’s bias will not be looked upon favorably in history. Your actions show that you are following a script. Remember that you have no jurisdiction over this case. You have allowed the federal government to bring forth all sorts of charges against him, despite
knowing he is innocent.
“The same prisoner was unjustly arrested and even after fleeing his home due to government invasion, he continues to face unjust imprisonment. His parents were also subjected to physical, emotional, and mental torture leading to their deaths. Injustice to Mr. Kanu is injustice everywhere”.
Recall that that Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, had last year cleared Kanu of all treason charge preferred against him by the Federal Government.
The Court had also ordered his immediate and unconditional release, and order the Federal Government refused to comply with.
Instead, the Government headed for the Supreme Court where it appealed the ruling but the apex court overturned the judgement, and ordered that the Federal Government could try him although it frowned at the process of his rendition to Nigeria.
IPOB had also last week, accused the judge of bias and asked him to hands off from Kanu’s trial.
Despite growing appeals for Kanu’s release as panacea to the disturbing insecurity in the South East, the Federal Government, has remained adamant.
