Dr Okwuonu receives highest ISN award for strides in kidney care

Chief Medical Director, CMD, Abia Specialist Hospital, Dr Chimezie Okwuonu, has been confered with the prestigious Fellow of the International Society of Nephrology, ISN, for his outstanding contributions towards kidney care.

The award was confered on him by the ISN President, Masaomi Nangaku.
Dr Okwuonu who is among the only two Africans recently selected for the Emerging Leaders Programme by ISN, received the award at the on-going World Conference of Nephrology, 2024,  Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Consultant Nephrologist who was among the pioneer team that conducted the first ever successful kidney transplant at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia, in a chat with Wawa News Global, said he was humbled by the global recognition, and thanked God for the grace.
Wawa News Global checks revealed that the award is one of the highest recognition given to a member in appreciation of his contribution to Nephrology care, research and education in his region.
Dr Okwuonu who was the immediate-past Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Abia State, had described his earlier selection for the ISN Emerging Leaders Programme as “a recognition of possibilities that exist in this part of the globe.”
 “It is a rare opportunity and privilege.
 I’m not taking the opportunity for granted, but will maximise it to give hope to kidney disease patients,” he told Wawa News Global then.
He added that he would leverage on the opportunity to further advance solution for kidney-related ailments.
The programme is an initiative of the International Society of Nephrology, to prepare a doctor to play a role in global healthcare, international collaboration and implementation research through many programmes including Harvard University-sponsored leadership programmes and participation in international conferences.
“It also improves capacity for local impact in addressing prevailing health needs of the region,”Dr Okwuonu said.
Wawa News Global had reported that only two persons were selected from Africa, and 13 people all over the world for the programme.

Okwuonu’s recent appointment by Gov. Alex Otti, as the CMD, Abia Specialist Hospital, is expected to bring to bare, his rich knowledge and expertise in Nephrology, and help position the hospital as a referral centre for kidney care in South East Nigeria.
He has already initiated moves to revive the dialysis centre at the hospital which has been moribund for over four years now.
