By Steve Oko
It was a celebration galore, Thursday, as the women of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), publicly presented their multi-million Naira Skills Acquisition Centre and a Hummer bus for their transportation convenience.
Women of the university community under the aegis of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike Women Association (MOUAUWA), trooped out in their numbers to celebrate the monumental feat.
Speaking at the colorful event, MOUAUWA President and wife of the Vice Chancellor, Dr Mrs Nkechinyere Iwe, said the historic project would help a lot of people earn a better living.
She commended her predecessor, Dr Bertha Otunta, for initiating the laudable project, and expressed joy it was accomplished in her tenure.
Quoting Apostle Paul in the Scriptures as recorded in 1 Corth. 3:6-7, Dr Mrs Iwe said: ” I planted, Apollos watered, but God who gave the increase. So, neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase”.
She said that the centre equiped with different kinds of modern sewing machines for both male and female outfits, was set to commence training immediately.
The MOUAUWA President also commended all those who supported the university women in equiping the centre.
She reiterated MOUAUWA’s commitment in empowering women for self reliance and for a better society.
On the Hummer bus, Mrs Iwe said it would enable the association in its officials trips, adding that it will also be used for commercial purposes.
Speaking at the event that was massively attended by women of the university community and its host communities, the VC, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, expressed worry over the rate of abandoned projects in the country.
The VC queried the wisdom in office holders embarking on new projects without first completing laudable uncompleted projects inherited from their predecessors.
” Any good successive leadership will normally ensure the completion of projects it meets on arrival because it is to accomplish strategic plans of such organization”.
Professor Iwe commended the university women for the noble project, saying that the centre will complement the efforts of the university towards empowering its students for self reliance.
” This centre will operate in synergy with our Entrepreneural Centre and other centres that are coming up for skills acquisition”, he said.
Professor Iwe advised the university women to remain united and guide against issues capable of dividing them.
” Do not toy with your unity; this university needs your unity to advance”, the VC added.
Professor Iwe who said his emergence was to bequeath enduring legacies and restore the glory of the institution, solicited the cooperation of all staff.
He promised to carry everyone along, adding that his administration will continue to encourage the university women realise their vision.
Speaking earlier, Mrs Otunta, the wife of the immediate-past VC, the late Professor Francis Otunta commended her successor for building on the foundation she said.
She described Dr Mrs Iwe as a rare gem, and pledged to always support her.
Mrs Otunta said that the actualisation of the project years after she left the university had given her a sense of fulfilment.
Wawa News Global reports that the event was planned and executed by Prof. Mabel Ifeoma Onwuka-led Program/Project/Fund Raising Committee.
Other members of the committee include: Mrs Eucharia Mejah, Dr Sally Chikezie, Mrs Onyinyechi Oko, Mrs Lawretta Princewill , and Dr Chioma Nwakamma.
