2023 Isuikwuato/Umunneochi fed constituency: Onyejeocha vs Onyejeocha

By Steve Oko
One of the elections  in 2023 that seems to have been already decided is the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal consituency seat currently occupied by Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives.
It is already clear from every standpoint that the contest is just between two individuals: Nkeiruka Onyejeocha , and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The score card of the four-time legislator and APC candidate, no doubt, has booked her a return ticket to the green chamber.
Interesting too, the quality of other flag bearers that emerged from the opposition parties that have so far conducted their primaries, is indeed no match to the political mastery plus sophistry of the Deputy Chief Whip.
Apart from having the magic wand of winning elections which she has displayed in four different political seasons even while in the opposition, Rep Onyejeocha has so many things going for her.
Yes, it is true that over 90% if not all political office holders and seekers in this part of the world are driven by personal interest, there is  no gainsaying the fact that Rep. Onyejeocha has performed considerably.
She is arguably the only performing federal lawmaker in Abia North if not the entire state, her political party not withstanding.
Nobody can say she is flawless but truth is that Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has significantly affected the lives of her constituents in diverse ways and forms.
Apart from attracting identifiable projects doting the landscape of Isuikwuato and Umunneochi, the lawmaker has personally touched lives both the high and the low including her political enemies.
In the past three years at least, she has consistently bankrolled the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE, fees of all West African Examination Council, WAEC candidates in public and  select private secondary schools in the entire constituency.

The gesture alone has provided a huge relief to parents especially those with two or more children or wards sitting for SSCE.
Besides, Onyejeocha has since her migration to the National Assembly, sponsorsed annual free medical outreach for her constituents, a gesture she actually started long before  even becoming a lawmaker.
Thousands of indigent folks including people from  communities outside her constituency have benefited from this humanitarian gesture of a lawmaker who goes beyond sympathy to show empathy to her people.
Few years ago, Rep. Onyejeocha took the free medical outreach to a higher pedestal by building a hospital in memory of her late mother where the sick now get free medical treatment.
Every year, a team of medical experts from different branches of medicine including foreign expatriates are sponsorsed to the hospital for free medical outreach, courtesy of Rep. Onyejeocha.
Different kinds of surgeries including eye surgeries are conducted free of charge with complicated cases refered to higher hospitals while she picks the bill.
In assisting constituents secure job opportunities, Rep. Onyejeocha appears to have excelled in this too.
Numerous youths from her constituency in federal jobs today give her the credit for facilitating such jobs. What more can an employable youth get from a performing lawmaker?
Nonetheless, Onyejeocha also believes in empowerment. In as much as giving out tricycles and motorcycles may not be the best form of empowerment for the youths in the long run, not giving at all isn’t better either.
Over the years, she has enabled thousands of her constituents cross the poverty line via tricycle, motorcycle, hair dressing and barbing kits, grinding machine and similar empowerment empowerments.
She has also identified with farmers through donation of fertilisers and other farm implements to boost their farming activities.
The lawmaker has also assisted in training of farmers from the constituency in mordern Agriculture.

Hon. Onyejeocha is a grass root mobiliser and, incontrovertibly in firm grip of a great chunk of her constituents more than any known politician in the constituency for now.
In fact, her followership is inter-party. She maintains and services a swarming supporters in every community in the federal consituency.

There is a general belief in the constituency that no matter the political party with which she contests , Rep. Onyejeocha will continue to win elections if she sustains her current approaches.
Even if she runs as an independent candidate, she will still continue to win elections in the foreseeable future because there is a secret she seems to have discovered on how to carry constituents along which other politicians are yet to discover.

She may not have scored 100%, and of course cannot and is not expected to, but it is not in doubt that Onyejeocha has impressively scored above average in virtually all the fronts.
The more reason she needs to return to the green chamber is that she stands the chance of getting the position of a Presiding Officer being a ranking lawmaker, and in the event that the position of the President eludes South East and the zone may need to be compensated with the Speakership of the House of Representatives. Onyejeocha comes handy when the likely choices are being considered.
She is a dogged fighter and ‘a never-say-quit’ leader in terms of federal projects. While her Campaign Organisation may have to advertise her projects for the unconverted to see, her constituents know that the presence of federal Aviation Training School today in Isuochi was only made possible by Onyejeocha while she chaired the House Committee on Aviation.
That the erosion sites in Isuikwuato are receiving federal government attention is not unconnected with her ability to network
She may have her faults just as some of her critics who want to be mild with words say she is ‘too firm and rigid’, and others who care less about choice of words accuse her of being ‘arrogant’, she definitely stands shoulder high above other federal legislators from the state in so many areas.
This is not to say that she does not need to improve on any observed uncherised trait if found to be true.
However, those close to her absolve her of arrogance, explaining that she rather does not know how to hide her feelings about what she does not like.
According to them, her outspokenness and bluntness are rather what her detractors misconstrue as arrogance.
But she knows better. As a Christian who has consistently held a monthly prayer and preaching service in her country home for thousands of her supporters, making amends where necessary, will definitely not be a big task for her.
Rep. Onyejeocha has also never joked with traditional rulers and the clergy in her constituency.
She has always shown these two classes of critical stakeholders respect and honour, and, our findings confirm that she has their continued blessings.
It is just an open secret in the constituency that Rep. Onyejeocha may continue to retain her seat for as long as she wants if she “continues in this might”
While other contestants in the 2023 elections may have to work harder and plan for a vigorous campaigns, Rep. Onyejeocha, from the look of things may just have to be planning for her swearing in ceremony.
