COVID -19: ‘We ‘ve received Greg Ibe’s 850 bags of rice, other donations’ – Gov Ikpeazu

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, has confirmed the receipt of 850 bags of rice, testing kits, three ambulances and other items of equipment donated to the Abia State Government by Professor Greg Ibe to complement government’s efforts to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
Ikpeazu who made the confirmation during a life broadcast Wednesday morning, also acknowledged the receipt of N28.5 million donation from the United Bank of Africa; 2500 pieces of nose mask from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC;  1000 hand sanitizers from Abia State University Uturu; and 125 litres of  from the Nigeria Breweries.
Ikpeazu commended the patriotic spirit of the donours and appealed for more donations to complement government’s effort in fighting the scourge.
On the sharing formula for  the largess Ikpeazu said  : The N28.5 Million from UBA will be used to set up a Laboratory at Abia State Specialist Hospital, Umuahia for the study and testing of medical samples in Abia State.
“The Nose Masks and PPE equipments from NCDC will be handed over to our first responders and medical workers for their safety.
“The Hand sanitizers and soft drinks from the Nigerian Breweries will also be handed over to our Officers in Charge at our 722 Health Centres in Abia State
“The 1,000 Sanitizers from the Abia State University will be added to the ones procured by the State Government and distributed to the general public through Churches and Community Associations.
“The 850 Bags of Rice from Prof. Ibe will be distributed as 50 bags to each of the 17 LGAs in Abia State and we are adding them to the existing food in our food bank for distribution to those most in need of them.”
The governor who said Abia State was well prepared to tackle any eventual outbreak of the pandemic said the state government had procured 5000 face mask from Aba tailors.
He said three isolation centres at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Abia State University Teaching Hospital Aba, and Amachara Specialist Hospital respectively had been equipped for the treatment of the pandemic.
“I am confident we have what it takes fight this scourge “, Ikpeazu boasted.
Ikpeazu  who expressed fury over the arbitrary hike in prices of food stuff and some essential products by shylock traders threatened sever sanctions against the perpetrators.
He warned that any trader or producer of products found taking undue advantage of the lockdown to exploit hapless citizens would be mercilessly dealt with by relevant government agencies.
“Government  will not allow any trader or service provider to take advantage of this situation to exploit the people “, Ikpeazu vowed.
He, however, advised residents against panic -buying of petroleum products due to associated high risk, assuring that such products will always be available.
