Member representing Awgu/ Aninri/Oji River federal constituency, Hon. Toby Okechukwu  (PDP), has expressed confidence in the capability and commitment of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to put on check the rising insecurity in Enugu State particularly the menacing activities of the killer Fulani  herdsmen.
The Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives who stated this in a press statement issued in Enugu by his Media Aide, Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu, said the Governor had contrary to opinions in some quarters, demonstrated enough capacity and competence in dealing with herdsmen menace as well as other forms of insecurity in the state.
He commended the Governor for his bold step towards flushing out Fulani criminal elements suspected to be behind the spate of killings and kidnappings around Awgu and its environs.
The lawmaker said Ugwuanyi’s recent personal visit to Awgu caves where he directed the immediate clearing of the surrounding bushes for clear visibility was a mark of bravery.
“The Governor’s personal visit to the hideout is  only akin to a military General who is proactive, and leads his troops from the front”, the federal lawmaker said.
Hon. Okechukwu said that he was  “confident that with this class of Governor and Government, that citizens can be rest assured that Enugu State is truly in the Hands of God.”
He expressed his unalloyed trust in the capacity of Gov.  Ugwuanyi  “to contain the rising security menace in Awgu, and indeed around the entire State.”
“As lawmakers , we relate with our colleagues from other states on a daily basis , and  I can testify that Enugu is still the safest and most peaceful state to live and do business, regardless of these recent negative security trend”, he added.
He commended the Governor for “his bold, exemplary and decisive approach which I believe,  will yield the desired results pretty soon.”
The lawmaker who noted that security of lives and property “is the cardinal objective of every genuine government”, debunked media reports that Ugwuanyi had ordered the destruction of cultural heritage and artefacts of the people in his bid to smoke out criminal herders allegedly  hiding in the caves.
Okechukwu who said he had been in steady touch with the Governor declared that “there  is no plan whatsoever to obliterate natural heritage sites around these areas.”

He appealed to his constituents to rather see the Governor’s action as proactive and in the public best interest and ignore those trying to make political capital out of it.
“Following the personal visit of His Excellency and his team to the sites where it was believed were the coven /hideout of these criminals elements,  and subsequent executive pronouncement to destroy same, there has been media outrage among concerned citizens, who feel some treasured heritage sites like  caves and tunnels in these areas may also be affected and consequently destroyed.
“It was on this premise that the Deputy minority leader, House of Representative , Hon Toby Okechukwu, who represents the constituency where these affected Towns are situated,  lent his voice, to clear the air surrounding the modus of the proposed operation”, the statement partly read.
