Senator Mao Ohuabunwa of Abia North senatorial district (PDP), has lightened the economic burden of an Abia widow as he awarded scholarships to her undergraduate son .
The widow, Mrs. Helen Onuoha from Etitiama Nkporo lost her husband over a decade ago and has since then been struggling to keep the family following serious health challenge of two of her sons which has put the family under heavy financial pressure.
But when the Senator got wind of their plight he decided to intervene by awarding a scholarship to her undergraduate son.
The beneficiary, Master Chukwuemeka Onuoha is a 300 – level Political Science and Public Administration undergraduate of University of Uyo, UNIUYO.
He was at a shock when he was invited for a meeting with the senator who requested to see him after learning of the family’s plight.
The beneficiary who has been overwhelmed by the health condition of two of his younger siblings was overjoyed when the senator ,after a meeting at his Umuahia residence offered him a scholarship.
Senator Ohuabunwa who announced a N200,000 scholarship for the undergraduate in two tranches covering his third and final year said the beneficiary deserved such encouragement because of his determination and resilience in his academic pursuit despite the condition of the family.
He noted with delight that Chukwuemeka and the mother did not use the condition of the family as an excuse to resort to indecent acts for survival but decided to engage in something meaningful to remain afloat.
Ohuabunwa who is still at the election petitions tribunal with Orji Uzor Kalu over the outcome of the February 2019 National Assembly poll said education remained the bedrock of any society.
He expressed his readiness to increase his bursary awards to students and undergraduates from the zone, insisting that the best form of empowerment for youths is academic empowerment.
Ohuabunwa urged youths in the state to embrace education or acquire good vocations instead of resorting to base life or ‘easy -money’ businesses without future such as commercial tricycle operation popularly known as KEKE.
Responding, the widow who was in tears of joy over the gesture rained blessings on Ohuabunwa for coming to the aid of the family.
She expressed shock that the senator could so identify with them even when they had no direct contact nor were they related in any way.
Mrs. Onuoha who is a primary school teacher in a private school said the intervention was a huge relief to the family and thanked God for using the senator to lighten their burden.
