Information available to Wawa News Global says the abductors of the traditional ruler of Obum Agbogugu, in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, HRH Igwe Sunday Orji, and his wife have demanded N50 million ransom for them to regain their freedom.
The monarch and his wife were abducted by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen along the Agbogwugwu axis of the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway.
They were reportedly returning from a function in Awgu town when the incident occurred around 5:30 pm Sunday.
A former Commissioner for Information in Abia State, Mr. Eze Chikamnayo was also attacked by the same hoodlums but was lucky to escape by the whiskers even though his car was riddled with bullets.
Wawa News Global gathered from a source close to the palace that the abductors of the monarch had contacted his family and demanded a ransom of N50 million.
The source, however, could not give details of any discussion(s) with the abductors considering the very sensitive nature of the matter.
Meanwhile rescue efforts were on to free the victims.
Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has convened emergency security meeting with various neighbourhood associations in the state.
He has also ordered security agencies in the state to ensure immediate rescue of the monarch and his wife.
Herdsmen atrocities have been on the increase in Enugu State in the recent times.
Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on August 1, gruesomely murdered a Catholic priest in Awgu .
The dastardly incident occurred few days after yet another priest was also reportedly attacked by herders.
The incidents sparked protest in Enugu by Catholic priests who almost locked down the Coal City state on Saturday, demanding justice.
The cleric who thronged out in their numbers also were angry with the state governor who they described as a weakling, alleging he is not doing enough to tackle herdsmen menace in the state.
Shouts of “Wake up, Gov. Ugwuanyi wake up “, “Our Governor you are not doing well on security “, rented the air as the visibly angry protesters marched on major streets in the Enugu metropolis.
The irate priests who carried placards and chanted war songs also demanded the ejection of armed herdsmen from the state.
