The Abia House of Assembly ad hoc commitee has cautioned the residents of Aba, the commercial hub of Abia, against the dangers of dumping their refuse in the drainages.
The Chairman of the five-member committee on the flood disaster in Aba, Hon. Abraham Oba, gave the warning during the committee’s on-the-spot visit to the flood ravaged areas of the city.
Oba decried the level of devastation by the recent flood disaster in the area, and warned that if action was not taken urgently the city might be submerged.
The chairman, during the committee’s visits to different local government headquarters and markets in Aba, told the residents that the were the cause of the problem.
According to him, the people were fond of dumping their refuse into the drainages, thereby blocking it when it rained.
Oba, a member, representing Aba Central, expressed disappointment at the level of decay at Arariaria, Iziukwu and Assannetu markets, and sensitised the traders on the importance proper refuse disposal.
“We are disappointed with what we have seen.Aba is our own, we should not allow it to decay.Let us sanitise it, let us stop dumping our refuse in the drainages,” he appealed to them.
The Care-taker Committee Chairman of Aba South Local Government, Dr. Christian Okoli applauded the House committee members for their oversight function.
Okoli, while receiving the committee, said the flood problem had been a source of concern to him, as it had destroyed a lot of goods and property and made life difficult in his area.
He assured of his administration’s resolve to collaborate with all the relevant stakeholders to bring about a lasting solution to it.
Oba, however, told newsmen that the committee would by next week visit the remaining markets, as well as meet with the traditional rulers and other stakeholders, after which it would submit its report.
The committee visited the headquartres of Osisioma, Aba North and South local government areas in Aba, where the council chairmen promised to join hands in order to address the problem.
Other members of committee on the visit include: Hon. Nnamdi Allen Nwachukwu (Osisioma South), Hon. Aaron Uzodike (Aba North) and Hon. Obinna Ichitta (Aba South).
It could be recalled that the House of Assembly, had during a plenary presided over by Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, recently set up the ad hoc committee, following a motion on the matter of urgent importance moved by Hon. Oba. End.
