Ruga : Anti-Kalu’s protest breaks rocks Isuochi
By Steve Oko
Heavy protest broke out today (Friday ) at Isuochi, Ummunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State over claims by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu that he built Ruga in Lokpanta while he was Governor.
Irate youths took to the street chanting anti Kalu and Ruga songs.
The youths stormed the Council headquarters at Nkwoagu Isuochi vowing never to cede any part of their land for the controversial Ruga.
In an interview with newsmen, Spokesman of the protesters and Chairman of Abia North Counsellors’ Forum, Hon. Chiagozie Egbu, said Kalu advertised his ignorance and shallow knowledge of the true meaning of Ruga by such “shameful statement”.
He expressed shock that Kalu could claim he established Ruga in their land when it was only a cattle market that he relocated from Umuahia to Lokpanta.
The Youth Leader said Kalu was on his own by such claims, and warned him to ” watch his words”.
He said : ” We want the world to hear us : there is no Ruga anywhere in Umunneochi or Abia State. What is at Lokpanta is cattle market.
“We are disappointed in Orji Uzor Kalu. He is on his own and never spoke for us nor Abia North. It is appaling that a senator and former Governor does not know the difference between a cattle market and Fulani settlement.
” Our position is clear : Umunneochi youths can never accept Ruga in our land “.
He, therefore, urged members of the public to disregard Kalu who he described as a saboteure and betrayer of Igbo interest.
Adding his voice, former Counsellor representing Mballa Achara Ward, Hon. Kelechi Moses , warned Kalu to be mindful of his utterances.
He said Kalu resorted to anti-Igbo vituperations as a tact to get the protection of the Northern oligarchy and the Presidency in his desperation to evade justice in his “EFCC case” as well as electoral fraud suit at the tribunal.
“Kalu knows he is an interim senator and that his days in the senate are numbered. That is why he has turned himself to a spokesman of the caliphate.
“He has made Abia North a laughing stock at the National Assembly through his uncoordinated and embarrassing comments.
“We want Nigerians to know that Kalu only spoke out of illiteracy and poor understanding of Ruga. He is a total disgrace to Abia North “.
The youths also issued strong warning to traditional rulers in Abia North never to cede or sell any land in the zone for any unknown person or undefined purpose.
On the rumour that some traditional rulers are under intense pressure to accept huge sums of money by certain politicians and cede community land for Ruga, the youths vowed to deal ruthlessly with any monarch who succumbs to such pressure.
Responding, the Chairman of Umunneochi LGA, Mr Chima Mgbeke, appealed to the youths to be calm, adding that the state Government as well as Igbo Leaders have taken a position on Ruga which no single individual or senator could void.
